HEALTHY FUTURES

[Duration: January 2011 – December 2014 (48 months)]

HEALTHY FUTURES is a collaborative inter-disciplinary research project comprised of 15 partners based in Africa and Europe. It aims to respond to the impact environmental change will have on three water-related vector-borne diseases (malaria, Rift Valley fever & schistosomiasis) in eastern Africa by constructing disease mapping systems, taking into account environmental/climatic trends and changes in socio-economic conditions, to predict future risk.

Although the immediate geographic focus of the HEALTHY FUTURES project is eastern Africa, the approach adopted in and the findings of the research are expected to have applications outside the study area.

If you would like to know more about this project, please either click on HEALTHY FUTURES or go to the official HEALTHY FUTURES website: WWW.HEALTHYFUTURES.EU

MarineTT

[Duration: February 2010 – August 2012 (30 Months)]

MarineTT is premised on the concept that knowledge is a major source of competitive advantage in business. Much potentially valuable knowledge, locked into inaccessible or non-user-friendly contexts, is unused because key stakeholders are not aware of its existence. MarineTT is primarily concerned with marine environmental research, but the approach used will facilitate coverage of other themes (climate change, biodiversity, earth observation, and urban development) and important sub-topics (such as fisheries and aquaculture) to be included, given their relevance to the key area of the impacts of economic growth leading to environmental degradation, and the current ecosystem management approach supported by the EC.

If you would like to know more about this project, please either click on MarineTT or go to the official MarineTT website: WWW.MARINETT.EU

ARRAINA

[Duration: January 2012- December 2016 (60 months)]

ARRAINA aims at developing tools (pertinent biomarkers) required to measure and predict the effects of alternative feeds on fish metabolism and health, and define nutritional requirements for the 5 main European farmed fish species.

The project will use this tools to develop alternative feeds and novel vectors for early life stages of fish development that have not been sufficiently addressed yet, and study the long-term effects of these alternative feeds on metabolism, performance, quality and waste management over the full life-cycle (egg to broodstock). ARRAINA will also validate this concept of nutritional programming in fish.

MYFISH aims at developing new Maximum Sustainable Yield indicators that can ensure high levels of fishery yield while respecting ecological, economic and social sustainability thus contributing to achieving Good Environmental Status (GES) as set in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). MYFISH will contribute to the new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) by defining management measures to achieve this objective.

MYFISH with its multidisciplinary approach is composed of leading European institutes in the cross-cutting disciplines of ecosystem sciences, fisheries research, fisheries and environmental economics and social sciences. The Consortium is composed of 31 partners from 11 European countries and will investigate six specific case studies.

[Duration: March 2012- February 2015 (36 months)]

With 25 multidisciplinary partners from 11 countries based across the whole of Europe (from Iceland to Turkey) SOCIOEC will promote a scientific basis for the responsible, ecosystem based and sustainable management of Europe's fisheries in support of the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

SOCIOEC aim to integrate three key academic disciplines of fisheries science (ecology, economics and social sciences), so as to perform a generic analysis of the wide range of current and emerging management measures in the current CFP and possible measures that may be introduced in order to achieve a more profitable and efficient fishing sector that provides sustainable employment and contributes to a knowledge based economy.

SOCIOEC will investigate six specific case studies which are most representative of European fisheries.

If you would like to know more about this project, please go to the official Socioec website: WWW.SOCIOEC.EU

FORCE

[Duration: November 2011- April 2014 (30 months)]

One of the main factors which hampers the sustainable development of aquaculture and fishery in Egypt as well as the whole Mediterranean North African region is the lack of transfer of state-of-the-art Science and Technology.

FORCE, aims to enhance the capacity of The National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF), Egypt, to carry out research activities aimed at supporting the implementation of sound and science-based policies for the sustainable development of aquaculture and fishery in Egypt, as well as in the whole Mediterranean North African region.
