Aquaculture Training Manuals: CD-ROM on “Simple methods for
aquacultureâ€? – Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
(FAO)
The FAO Fisheries
Department has published the second version of the CD-ROM of the FAO
Training Series: Simple methods for aquaculture. The first version of
the CD-ROM was released in 2003 in English and French. This second
release has been revised, improved and includes also all manuals in
Spanish. The Internet version of the CD-ROM is also available on the
FAO Web site (www.fao.org).
The five training manuals on Simple methods for aquaculture and the
Handbook on small-scale freshwater fish farming presented in this
CD-ROM have been produced by the Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture
Service of the Fishery Resources Division, FAO Fisheries Department.
These manuals are written in simple language and focus on the practical
aspects of semi-intensive fish culture in freshwaters, from site
selection and fish farm construction to the raising, final harvesting
and marketing of the fish. They are primarily intended for extension
workers, technicians and teachers, to help them present the practical
aspects of freshwater fish farming to small-scale farmers in developing
countries.

Fish Immunology Workshop. Wageningen University (the Netherlands), 15 - 19 April 2007
The
annual Fish Immunology workshop comprises presentations (30 minutes to
one-hour) by experienced lecturers, taking time to thoroughly introduce
each subject, and two practical afternoons.
Objective:
To provide participants with advanced knowledge, both theoretical and
practical, on the fish immune system. Emphasis will be placed on innate
and acquired immunity, on immune modulation and on immunity to
infection. During the workshop the latest insights in the evolution of
the immune system but also related issues such as (experimental) animal
welfare and the influence of stress on the immune response will be
discussed.
Level:
The workshop is targeting academic and company researchers as well as
management staff in the aquaculture industry. We more than welcome PhD
students and therefore have lowered (!) the registration fee for PhD
students. The official language of the workshop is English.
The number of participants is limited to 30 persons, admitted on a
‘first-come’ basis. Registration fee is 250 € (Ph.D.), 450 € (academic
staff) or 550 € (company staff). For all-in registration (including
accommodation and all meals) add 450 € for the whole workshop period.
Advanced
course: ‘Quality and safety control of fish and fish products’.
Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (Spain), 11- 15 June 2007
Objective of this course:
Through a general review of the state of the art on fish safety and
quality, the course aims to (i) improve the knowledge about safety and
quality standards of fish and fish products; (ii) contribute to assure
that controls are efficient, adequate and harmonized in different
countries; and (iii) illustrate how risk analysis is already
influencing fish safety in developed countries, and how this has in
turn affected international fish trade.
Organization:
The course is organized by the International Centre for Advanced
Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), through the Mediterranean
Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ), with the collaboration of the
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through
the Fisheries Department, and will take place at the Mediterranean
Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza.
Admission:
The course is designed for a maximum of 25 participants with a
university degree and is aimed at a broad sector of professionals
within the fish industry and public administrations. Members of the
competent authorities (fish inspection) and safety and quality managers
in the fish industry will surely profit from most of the programme. In
addition, professionals from R&D institutions and universities as
well as professionals dealing with risk management of fish and fish
products will find this course useful.
CRAB Newsletter – ‘Biocontrol’ of aquaculture biofouling
This second Newsletter
issue of the CRAB project (collective research on aquaculture
biofouling) focuses on the use of biological grazers to reduce
biofouling in aquaculture. The objective of CRAB is to develop and
implement effective biofouling prevention and management strategies for
the aquaculture industry.
New Aquatic Renewable Energy Technologies Project (Aqua-RET)
Aqua-RET (Aquatic Renewable Energy Technologies) is a new EU funded Leonardo da Vinci project coordinated by AquaTT. Aqua-RET will provide an e-learning tool available online and on CD-ROM, and will be supported by an educational poster series. The objective of the e-learning tool is to show the user, in straightforward steps, how aquatic renewable energy technologies work, how they benefit the economy, where and how they fit into the landscape and the important environmental considerations to take into account when planning and selecting sites for generating power. Aqua-RET held its first successful partner meeting in Dublin, Ireland in November 2006. The consortium consists of eight partners from six European countries (Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Romania and the United Kingdom). For more information contact david@aquatt.ie.
Press
Release FEAP: Ground-breaking meeting for trans-national promotion and
communication on Mediterranean aquaculture (7th December 2006)
On
the 6th December 2006, in Athens, the Federation of European
Aquaculture Producers (FEAP) coordinated a meeting between the
representatives of the EU Mediterranean fish farming sector (Greece,
Spain, France and Italy) and their respective Ministries of Fisheries.
The objectives of the meeting were to review the concept of
trans-national generic promotion activities, specifically concerning
seabass and seabream, supporting both market development and sectoral
communication activities.
There was agreement that a long-term view is required for such actions
to be effective and, for the first time, multi-lateral cooperation
between the National Ministries of Mediterranean EU Member States was
explored in depth.
With the completion of the national strategic plans for aquaculture
development being imminent, within the finalisation of the European
Fisheries Fund that covers the period 2007-2013, the FEAP
representatives reported the resolutions made on this topic, noting the
priority for wide communication actions directed towards the European
consumer. Attention was drawn to the will to better coordinate the
promotion and communication actions that have been achieved
individually and to provide a better focus on potential markets,
particularly for those States with export activities.
The meeting decided to create an ad-hoc platform for communication on
Mediterranean aquaculture composed of representatives from the 4 Member
States concerned, under the coordination of the FEAP. In the immediate
future, a schedule of actions and activities for the forthcoming 2
years will be defined so as to give substance to the ideas developed.
The first meeting of this communication platform will be held in
February 2007.
Mr. John Stephanis, President of the FEAP and the Federation of Greek
Maricultures, said “It gives me great pleasure to announce this
ground-breaking decision as we have been looking to develop such a
common European action for several years. We believe that this will be
of immense benefit to the Mediterranean fish farmers. I have to
congratulate the representatives of the Ministries of Fisheries for
their foresight and commitment to the development of our sector.

control of the reproduction in farmed fish, domestication of new
species and the impact of human activity (environmental modifications,
pollution, fisheries) on reproductive physiology of fish. The meeting
will report the striking developments emerging from the most recent
advances and consider this wealth of knowledge in the wider context of
the comparative physiology of vertebrate reproduction.

day’, workshops for industry and the AE2007 student forum. As always,
various social events will be a part of the Aquaculture Europe meeting.
The conference theme Competing claims addresses the various levels of
competition that aquaculture faces at present, but upon which its
future development will depend. "Claims" exist from other stakeholders
with respect to physical space, investment and other finances,
resources (e.g. for feed raw materials and water resources), technology
and others.
