AQUAEXCEL – invitation to join the newly developed online Aquaculture Research Infrastructure Directory

AQUAEXCEL (Aquaculture Infrastructures for Excellence in European Fish Research) is an EU FP7 project which aims to integrate key aquaculture research infrastructures across Europe in order to promote their coordinated use and development. Through collaboration among 17 partners and 23 facilities, AQUAEXCEL offers top class research infrastructures for both basic and applied research, giving aquaculture research groups the opportunity to utilise AQUAEXCEL's facilities.

In addition, it aims to provide an integrated online infobase listing all aquaculture research infrastructures in Europe and Associated countries, including non-AQUAEXCEL partners. The infobase will be a viable European aquaculture research infrastructure directory in the long term, and a powerful tool to identify European facilities, genetic and human resources and to promote mutual collaboration.

We invite you to submit information on your aquaculture research infrastructure to the AQUAEXCEL database. By doing so, you will:

    • promote your institution and its facilities worldwide
    • allow colleagues worldwide to identify your institution, its properties and its researchers
    • provide opportunities for international cooperation
    • create networking possibilities

To add your Research Infrastructure to the AQUAEXCEL online infobase, go to: http://www.aquaexcel.eu/rimap

    1. Click on “Register to map”

AQUAEXCEL - 3rd Call for Transnational Access

On a regular basis, the AQUAEXCEL project invites proposals from European research groups for scientific research that utilises the facilities of any of the participating Aquaculture Research Infrastructures. The AQUAEXCEL project unites major aquaculture experimental facilities with capacity to undertake experimental trials on a selection of commercially important fish aquaculture species and system types.

These facilities are made available to the research community for Transnational Access (TNA) with the support of the European Union 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (Infrastructures). Interested researchers can propose projects that involve visits of one or two people to the chosen Research Infrastructure for periods of up to three months. The research work and associated travel and subsistence expenses will be paid for under the project. The third Call for Access is officially open. Deadline is the 14th of September 2012. For more information click here (PDF) or visit http://www.aquaexcel.eu/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=42:call-for-access.

Industry training courses for the Mediterranean Mariculture industry

IINTRANEMMA (Innovation Transfer Network for Mediterranean Mariculture) is a two year project funded by the EU Lifelong Learning Programme through The State Scholarships Foundation (IKY), Greece. This pioneering project is led by producers associations in Greece, Spain and Turkey. The intention is to identify shared knowledge gaps and to develop applied targeted training courses that address the training needs of the Mediterranean Mariculture industry.

The INTRANEMMA series of training courses has been developed based on an extensive needs analysis of the Mediterranean sea bass and sea bream mariculture sector. By specifically targeting sector bottlenecks, it is hoped that the courses will upskill workers, transfer latest knowledge and be a forum for sharing experiences.

The partnership consists of relevant Mediterranean actors, Federation of Greek Maricultures (FGM – Coordinator) (Greece), APROMAR (Spain), Mugla Fish Farmers Association (Turkey), AQUARK (Greece) and AquaTT (Ireland) ensuring that the outputs meet the needs of the industry.

Healthy balance of nutrients for healthy reefs

Coral reefs are among the oldest ecosystems on Earth and, much like human habitats, they provide shelter and food for a large variety of marine species. However, despite their apparent toughness they are also very fragile - they can be damaged through human handling, chemical contamination and changes in the saline levels. When they are stressed in this manner, they release algae, lose their colour, turning white or 'bleached', and if it continues they could die. New research has discovered that the instances of bleaching susceptibility of reef corals could be increased as a result of an imbalance in nutrients in reef waters. Scientists put spotlight on marine power

A team of researchers from Israel and the United Kingdom has discovered that energy produced from the planet's oceans can increase twofold when novel methods for predicting wave power are used. Presented in the journal Renewable Energy, the results could help scientists drive and make marine renewable energy research an optimal source of power. ‘Something to Chew on: Challenging Controversies in Food and Health’

We all eat to live but many of us also live to eat. Everyone is a ‘food scientist’ as consumers have strong opinions about foods they like/dislike and the underlying reasons for this.  Many are also conscious of the effect of the foods they eat on their health. This 2012 book (177 pages) is a must, therefore, for enquiring consumers/general readers and also for students of food and health as it covers most of the so-called hot topics and controversies in food and health in a user-friendly and informative way.
