AQUAMED project sets first steps towards Mediterranean aquaculture stakeholder platform during Casablanca meeting (January 2011)
AQUAMED is an EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) project which aims to develop a multi-stakeholder platform for aquaculture research in the Mediterranean region, supporting the sustainable development of aquaculture in the region. It is hoped the platform will aid in avoiding duplication and fragmentation of research efforts, and stimulate long-term cooperation and coordination across policy makers, the aquaculture industry and RTD performers in the Mediterranean.
Another outcome of the project, discussed at this meeting, will be a typology of the Mediterranean countries participating in the project, an outcome which identifies the similarities between countries in the aquaculture sector, their specificities and related research needs. This will help to define intermediate platforms including the countries with common issues, in order to develop shared research programmes, projects and infrastructure. MarineTT Advisory Board provides insight on maximising the impact of European Marine Results
The innovative MarineTT project, aiming to unlock the potential of European marine research, got feedback from its Advisory Board on the methodologies used and its future plans. The MarineTT Advisory Board consists of high profile individuals from the Marine Sector across Europe with representatives from France, Norway, Portugal and Ireland. Now finishing its first year, MarineTT collected knowledge outputs from all marine-related FP6 and FP7 funded projects and is now analysing high potential outputs suitable for technology transfer. The ambition of MarineTT is to make a real contribution to improved access to European Union research results for industry, multipliers, the civil society, and policy-makers. It will lead to increased visibility and uptake of research results, data and analysis in the economy and in society, including in policy design and implementation.
For more information on the MarineTT project please contact the Project Officer at Fiona@aquatt.ie or go to www.marinett.eu
HEALTHY FUTURES is an EU funded seventh framework programme (FP7) project. It aims to construct a disease risk mapping system for three water-related, high-impact vector-borne diseases (malaria, Rift Valley fever and schistosomiasis) in Africa, taking into account environmental/climatic trends and changes in socio-economic conditions to predict future risk. Concentrating on eastern Africa as a study area, HEALTHY FUTURES comprises a comprehensive, inter-disciplinary consortium of health, environment, socio-economic, disease modelling and climate experts in addition to governmental health departments. To achieve its aims, HEALTHY FUTURES will deploy a bottom-up, end user/stakeholder-focused approach combining field-, laboratory- and library-based research over 4 years.
The project will kick-off with a meeting to be held in Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland 14-15 February. For more information on the project please download the Irish Environmental Protection Agency press release (PDF).
The Marine Board of the European Science Foundation (ESF) says in its latest report that Europe can take the leading role in marine biotechnology by 2020. Latest data show that the marine biotechnology market is valued at EUR 2.8 billion, and has the potential to grow up to 12% each year if industry and academia cooperate. EU-funded researchers develop toxin test for shellfish
Scientists at Queen's University Belfast in the UK have developed a new test that makes shellfish safer. This latest tool was developed as part of the BIOCOP ('New technologies to screen multiple chemical contaminants in foods') project. Food experts say it takes them up to two days to monitor potentially dangerous toxins in shellfish. This new technique, which involves biosensor technology, will cut the testing process down to just 30 minutes. The contribution of fish to global diets has reached a record of about 17 kg per person on average, supplying over three billion people with at least 15 percent of their average animal protein intake. This increase is due mainly to the ever-growing production of aquaculture which is set to overtake capture fisheries as a source of food fish, according to the State of the World's Fisheries and Aquaculture report. The report also stressed that the status of global fish stocks has not improved.
