Intensive PhD course on the Economics of Fisheries Management, CEMARE, University of Plymouth (UK), 16 - 27 July 2007
CEMARE at the
University of Portsmouth will arrange a PhD course on The Economics of
Fisheries Management Monday 16th July - Friday 27th July inclusive.
There will be four hours of lectures per day over 10 days, giving a
total of 40 hours.
Principal
lecturers will be Professor Trond Bjorndal of CEMARE and Professor
Gordon R. Munro of the University of British Columbia. There will also
be lectures by other members of CEMARE staff and one or two guest
lecturers.
There will be a fee of £ 350 to attend the course. Student accomodation will be available.

ENCORA - European
Network for Coastal Research Co-ordination Action - is a European
part-funded initiative that essentially acts as a "network of
networks", linking national coastal networks across Europe. ENCORA
provides a range of services to coastal practitioners and researchers,
including: a mechanism to search for contacts or information across
European coastal networks; opportunities for young professionals to
travel to conferences and take part in exchange visits and a Coastal
Wiki - which provides free access to coastal and marine literature.
New
Master of Science course ‘Aquaculture and Aquariology’, Warmia &
Mazury University in Olsztyn (Poland), start October 2007
The New Master
of Science in Aquaculture and Aquariology is a 1.5 - year programme at
university level covering the most important aspects of these fields.
For students following the regular 5-year study programme, Aquaculture
and Aquariology is the secondary-level education in fisheries.
Therefore those who have not completed the first-level fishery
education will be obliged to follow a course in basic fishery. The
course called “Basic Fisheries� will cover about 60% of the basic
programme and will continue for 3 semesters (for programme details, as
well as credit and ECTS points see web side: www.uwm.edu.pl/wosir/en.
The specialization course Aquaculture and Aquariology includes a practical training and thesis research projects. For the optional course (free choice), the student can select any course which is being provided at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Fisheries. There is a wide possibility for each individual student to tailor the study programme to his or her own personal preference. The relative large contribution of optional courses usually results in a very multidisciplinary composition of the student course programme. The strong collaborative overseas research and training links, a singular feature of the Faculty, allows access to pond and other aquaculture facilities for field experimental work and on-farm trials. Admission The Programme is open to the holders of undergraduate degree (Bachelor’s degree) and graduate degree (Master’s degree) in fisheries, aquaculture, animal husbandry, ichthyology, biology, agronomy, veterinary medicine, or any related area from recognised Colleges and Universities.

European Countries (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece),
cooperate in an innovating project – SEACASE (Sustainable Extensive and
Semi-intensive Coastal Aquaculture in Southern Europe) –, financed by
the European Commission, which intends to evaluate sustainability of
extensive and semi-intensive coastal aquaculture.
FEUFAR Project: Project on the Future of European Fisheries and Aquaculture Research The goal of the
FEUFAR project is to define the research required in the medium term (10
years), to enable exploitation and farming of aquatic resources in the
context of key challenges and risks for meeting sustainability
requirements. The main output of this exercise will be a publication
outlining the key challenges, strategic options and research needs
concerning fisheries and aquaculture in both European waters and waters
in which European fleets are operating under European agreements. The
project will contribute to the implementation of a future Maritime
Policy and to further strengthen the European Marine Research Area
through better anticipation of research needs in the field of fisheries
and aquaculture.

Seminar on North Sea Inshore Fisheries
The one day event will bring together representatives of Inshore fisheries from around the North Sea. Speakers from Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and Scotland will share their experiences in managing inshore fisheries. In particular, the seminar will explore the possibility of establishing a North Sea Inshore Fisheries Network which would provide a link between all of those countries an interest in North Sea Inshore Fisheries. The seminar is free to attend but places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. This symposium is an opportunity for the presentation of the latest scientific developments in the area of fish reproductive physiology. It aims to generate new insights from the basic and applied knowledge recently obtained in the field. Such studies include dealing with the control of the reproduction in farmed fish, domestication of new species and the impact of human activity (environmental modifications, pollution, fisheries) on reproductive physiology of fish. The meeting will report the striking developments emerging from the most recent advances and consider this wealth of knowledge in the wider context of the comparative physiology of vertebrate reproduction. Aquaculture Twin Event, COST/EUREKA Strategic Workshop & Brokerage Event
COST
and EUREKA have decided to join forces, combining a COST workshop with
a EUREKA project brokerage event. Day one will comprise a strategic
workshop to discuss important future research issues; how to solve the
increasing challenges facing the aquaculture industry and finding ways
towards a more sustainable industry. During day two, results from the
workshop will be presented, combined with other issues raised by
industry and of importance to future research activities; networking
between business people and researchers will be encouraged.
The Event will be hosted by the Technical University of Patras and Patras Science Park in Greece. This will be aligned with other ongoing international initiatives including COST Action 867 and the European Aquaculture Technology Platform.  AQUA-TNET,
the Socrates-Erasmus Thematic Network in the field of Aquaculture,
Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management, is pleased to announce its
first AQUA-TNET Annual Event. Venue will be the Hellenic Centre of
Marine Research, Crete (Greece). For this Event all AQUA-TNET members
and stakeholders are invited.
This two-day Event will involve workshops and presentations of all 9 Work Packages, plenary meetings, and stakeholder (representatives, research organisations, NGOs, SMEs, students, wider public) presentations on perceived needs from training providers, followed by discussions. Vertical work package workshops will be held with multi-stakeholder involvement to ensure implementation of the vertical objectives. The seventh International Symposium on Fish Immunology, organised by the Nordic Society for Fish Immunology (NOFFI) (http://www.noffi.org) will be held 18th - 22nd June, 2007, and is hosted by the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling (http://www.stir.ac.uk). The conference will last for three and half days (19th - 22nd June 2007) and will consist of plenary and keynote lectures, oral and poster presentations covering both basic and applied fish immunology. There will also be a one-day workshop on the day prior to the conference (18th June 2007) aimed at PhD students and young researchers which will focus on new, cutting-edge antibody technologies in fish immunology. This policy day focuses on the social dimensions of MPA governance in a global perspective. It aims to gather an international audience of policymakers, academics, and civil society groups, for a cutting edge debate on topics relevant to North and South. Policy day statements highlighting key issues will be formatted into a policy brief, to be distributed to all participants. Founded in 1989, the European Association of Fisheries Economists (EAFE) is an independent association of economists working in fisheries, including the catching, aquaculture and on-shore sectors, in the member states of the European Economic Area. The XVIIIth Annual EAFE Conference is intended to contribute to the EAFE objectives by providing a forum for the dissemination of recent advances in fisheries and aquaculture economics and management and to promote discussion amongst researchers, managers, policy makers and stakeholders in the fisheries sector.

The
AquaNor Forum is a new feature to the world’s biggest aquaculture
exhibition – Aqua Nor. Due to be held every two years, the Aqua Nor

discuss the key issues that affect those developments.

World Seafood Congress 2007
The
World Seafood Congress 2007 will consist of a conference and an
exhibition dedicated to the theme of “Innovation in the Seafood
Industry� where exhibitors will showcase the latest technologies and
trends in new product and process development, quality assurance and
eco-labelling.
The Congress will be highly interactive; featuring a mix of plenary sessions addressed by leading experts from around the world along with tightly focussed breakout sessions that will encourage lively debate. These sessions will cover areas such as market access restrictions due to import authority requirements; the retail sector and the changing dynamics of seafood consumption; communicating the risks and benefits of eating seafood; seafood nutrition and sustainability; trends in sustainable fishing technology; seafood standard certification; consumer confidence and sustainability; models for managing fisheries sustainability; innovations in chemical risk management and testing; and the potential and challenges of the emerging functional foods markets.

2007 Forum on Fishery Science and Technology
The
Forum on Fishery Science and Technology was created by the Chinese
Academy of Fishery Sciences (CAFS) in 2003. The purpose of the forum is
to establish a high level forum on fishery science and technology for
scientists in China as well as around the world, to provide a new
platform for fishery technical cooperation between China and other
countries, and to provide a channel for scientists all over the world
to share their experiences and achievements.
The 2007 Forum on Fishery Science and Technology will focus on the key fields of fishery research, including fishing (fishing technology, responsible fisheries), fishery resource and environment (sustainable utilization and protection of fishery resource, conservation and rehabilitation of fishery environment and ecosystem), aquaculture (fish farming technology, genetic breeding, nutrition and feed, disease control) and fishery product processing (processing technology, quality and safety), etc.
Call for Papers:
Aquaculture Europe 2007
The
European Aquaculture Society and Eurasia Trade Fairs have combined
their aquaculture events to launch the first “new format� Aquaculture
Europe event, which combines a scientific conference with the highly
successful Future Fish Eurasia Exhibition.
The interface between these two main features – the industry forum - will be filled by special events, including an industry day or ‘farmers day’, workshops for industry and the AE2007 student forum. As always, various social events will be a part of the Aquaculture Europe meeting. The conference theme Competing claims addresses the various levels of competition that aquaculture faces at present, but upon which its future development will depend. "Claims" exist from other stakeholders with respect to physical space, investment and other finances, resources (e.g. for feed raw materials and water resources), technology and others. Science Foundation, principally aimed at European young researchers, to

Call for applications for Early stage research training fellowships in Marine Sciences
Applications are
invited for 3 fellowships for 12-month stays in one of the technology

Archived discussion: Training Managers for 21st Century Fisheries Listserv The trainfishmngr listserv is
designed to enhance discussion and disseminate information about
training for the needs of 21st century fisheries. The primary goal of
this list is to facilitate communication among those who supply
fisheries management related training, and those who demand training -
including managers in need of training and employers of managers.
Managers are defined broadly as those who participate significantly in
the fisheries management process.

European newsletter on fisheries and the environment is now available
