New Master of Science course ‘Aquaculture and Aquariology’, Warmia & Mazury University in Olsztyn (Poland), start October 2007

The New Master of Science in Aquaculture and Aquariology is a 1.5 - year programme at university level covering the most important aspects of these fields. For students following the regular 5-year study programme, Aquaculture and Aquariology is the secondary-level education in fisheries. Therefore those who have not completed the first-level fishery education will be obliged to follow a course in basic fishery. The course called “Basic Fisheriesâ€? will cover about 60% of the basic programme and will continue for 3 semesters (for programme details, as well as credit and ECTS points see web side: www.uwm.edu.pl/wosir/en.

The specialization course Aquaculture and Aquariology includes a practical training and thesis research projects. For the optional course (free choice), the student can select any course which is being provided at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Fisheries. There is a wide possibility for each individual student to tailor the study programme to his or her own personal preference. The relative large contribution of optional courses usually results in a very multidisciplinary composition of the student course programme. The strong collaborative overseas research and training links, a singular feature of the Faculty, allows access to pond and other aquaculture facilities for field experimental work and on-farm trials.

Admission
The Programme is open to the holders of undergraduate degree (Bachelor’s degree) and graduate degree (Master’s degree) in fisheries, aquaculture, animal husbandry, ichthyology, biology, agronomy, veterinary medicine, or any related area from recognised Colleges and Universities.

Collaboration

Successful AQUA-TNET core group meeting, Barcelona (Spain), 19 – 20 March 2007

The latest AQUA-TNET core group meeting took place in Barcelona (Spain), 19-20th March 2007. AQUA-TNET is the European Thematic Network in the field of aquaculture, fisheries and aquatic resources management. This multidisciplinary Thematic Network unites both academic and vocational aspects of the European Union Bologna reforms and the establishment of the European Higher Education Area in the field of Aquaculture, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management. The Bologna Declaration in 1999 has initiated the widest reaching reforms to European higher education in decades and imposes on all European Universities a new organization of university studies.

The meeting in Barcelona consisted of core group meetings of all 6 Work Packages and plenary meetings with core members, in which Work Package progress and future plans were discussed. Also, a start was made with planning the first Major Event (Annual Event), to be held  June 2007.

The AQUA-TNET network currently consists of 109 European partners, representing universities, training organisations, stakeholder associations and research institutes and comprises six themed work packages (WP), prioritising themes in education and training, encapsulating the changes taking place in the Bologna cycles. Three umbrella packages covering the needs of the industry (WP7), needs of research (WP8) and the role of science in society & consumers concerns (WP9), are merging different aspects of the other work packages from a specific point of view. During the meeting in Barcelona a first start was made with one of the three umbrella packages, merging the needs of research into the six vertical work packages.

Release: comprehensive inventory of the European Marine Research Funded Projects (EurOcean-MaP)

EurOcean - European Centre for Information on Marine Science ad Technology - has completed an inventory of 516 projects partly or entirely related to marine science and technology and funded by various European mechanisms.

It is the first time that such a comprehensive inventory, named EurOcean-MaP, of marine research projects funded in Europe has been achieved. This inventory gathers information on projects funded by COST, EUREKA, EUROCORES (ESF), 6th Framework Programme (DG Research), INTERREG III (DG Region), LIFE and SMAP (DG Environment).

The Info-Base EurOcean MaP is available on-line, free of charge, at http://www.eurocean.org/contents.php?id=423 through a friendly-user interface. This interface provides the end-user with a set of efficient tools for searching, retrieving and printing information related to projects.

PESCALEX Progress Meeting - Crete

Good progress has been made in the PESCALEX project in the 9 months since the Startup meeting. The PESCALEX website is now online at http://www.pescalex.org, using a content management design, which allows for a variety of useful features.

The Beginner Language module has now been designed and processed in English, while the translations into French, Spanish, Norwegian and Polish  of the 24 Level 1 and 2 lessons are being carried out. The partners were able to test all the above features as well as the available content. They made suggestions and recommendations which will involve a lot of redesigning and reprogramming.

A Spanish team from CETMAR attended a CLIL conference in Helsinki in June 2006 and made an important presentation which completely changed the thinking of the PESCALEX partnership concerning the pilot materials, both from the Content and the Language perspective. Therefore the partnership decided that the best way to make use of all the extremely relevant materials being developed in the project, was to invent a new type of learning tool capable of optimising the PESCALEX CLIL potential. The partnership language specialists came up with the idea of inventing a language game, based on one of the content modules, that could be either a simulation game or a board game, involving student teams of different nationalities, led by content teachers. This approach could simulate the team teaching approach advocated by current CLIL methodology.

Aquaculture Europe 2007
24 – 27 October 2007, Istanbul (Turkey)

The European Aquaculture Society and Eurasia Trade Fairs have combined their aquaculture events to launch the first “new formatâ€? Aquaculture Europe event, which combines a scientific conference with the highly successful Future Fish Eurasia Exhibition.

The interface between these two main features – the industry forum - will be filled by special events, including an industry day or ‘farmers day’, workshops for industry and the AE2007 student forum. As always, various social events will be a part of the Aquaculture Europe meeting.

The conference theme Competing claims addresses the various levels of competition that aquaculture faces at present, but upon which its future development will depend. "Claims" exist from other stakeholders with respect to physical space, investment and other finances, resources (e.g. for feed raw materials and water resources), technology and others.
