"Possible ways forward for Maritime Spatial Planning and Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the EU" This consultation is aimed at collecting background information for the Impact Assessment which the Commission launched in December 2010 on options for action on Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) and Integrated Coastal Zone Management. The commission is interested in hearing what the main challenges, possibilities, or needs are and to receive suggestions on how best to tackle them. "Green Paper on a Common Strategic Framework for future EU Research and Innovation Funding"
On 9th February 2011, the European Commission presented a Green Paper which proposes major changes to EU research and innovation funding to make participation easier, increase scientific and economic impact and provide better value for money. The changes, to be introduced in the next EU budget after 2013, would bring together the current Framework Programme for research, the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. More than 40 species of marine fish currently found in the Mediterranean could disappear in the next few years. According to a study for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ on the status of marine fish in the Mediterranean Sea, almost half of the species of sharks and rays and at least 12 species of bony fish are threatened with extinction due to overfishing, marine habitat degradation and pollution. Winner of the Peter Howgate Award for Young Fish Technologists, 2011
Ms. Clara Bah, a researcher at the Department of Food Science, University of Otago in New Zealand has won the first ever Peter Howgate Award for young fish technologists. The prize of EUR500 will help Clara to attend the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology (NZIFST) conference in Rotorua, New Zealand at the end of June 2011, at which she will present her MSc research findings on the bioactivity of fish roes from five commercial New Zealand fish species. Have you ever considered that fish may have ‘‘personalities‘‘? Of course, not in the same sense as people, our personalities are far more complex! But scientific research over the past few years has shown that fish differ in their responses to environmental stimuli, suggesting that ‘‘personalities‘‘ also exist in fish. Generally speaking, as has been establishd in other animal groups, individuals can be divided into two groups. So-called proactive fish tend to be more active and aggressive but find it more difficult to adapt to new situations. Reactive fish, on the other hand, are more passive and shy, but are more flexible in adapting to new situations.
If you would like to learn more about ‚‘‘personalities‘‘ in fish, search for ‘coping styles‘ and you will find plenty of scientific articles on the topic.
You are probably asking yourself what the relevance of this kind of knowledge could be for aquaculture? Well, individuals may perform differently under aquaculture conditions and this may have implications for production and welfare.
