Have you ever considered that fish may have ‘‘personalities‘‘? Of course, not in the same sense as people, our personalities are far more complex! But scientific research over the past few years has shown that fish differ in their responses to environmental stimuli, suggesting that ‘‘personalities‘‘ also exist in fish. Generally speaking, as has been establishd in other animal groups, individuals can be divided into two groups. So-called proactive fish tend to be more active and aggressive but find it more difficult to adapt to new situations. Reactive fish, on the other hand, are more passive and shy, but are more flexible in adapting to new situations.
If you would like to learn more about ‚‘‘personalities‘‘ in fish, search for ‘coping styles‘ and you will find plenty of scientific articles on the topic.
You are probably asking yourself what the relevance of this kind of knowledge could be for aquaculture? Well, individuals may perform differently under aquaculture conditions and this may have implications for production and welfare.
