    Interesting results - Top generic skills identified by Vocational Aqualabs project

    Vocational Aqualabs, funded by the EU Lifelong Learning Programme, recently carried out a needs analysis in relation to generic skills in aquaculture research. The results found that the majority of researchers agreed that Team Management is the top generic skill for a researcher to effectively move from academia to the private sector and Scientifc Writing is the top generic skill for a researcher to achieve a prominent career in academia.

    In contrast the majority of stakeholders identified Project Management as the top generic skill for a researcher to effectively move from academia to the private sector and as the top generic skill for an experienced researcher to have to achieve a senior position in their organisation. Download the analysis (WP2: Report on analysis of surveying, including recommendations for industry training and policy related to generic skills) from the project website or for a summary of the analysis (8 pages) click here.

    EU backs spreading marine genomic solutions

    Over the next three years, an EU-funded team of scientists and knowledge management specialists will align state-of-the-art “blue” biotechnology solutions with small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs), large corporations, and environmental regulators. The team also believes marine genomics has the potential to be used in everyday products such as medicine and food, and enrich marine biodiversity. The MG4U ('Marine Genomics for Users') project has been funded EUR 1.12 million under the 'KBBE' Theme of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

    Under MG4U, the team will publish online maps, rollout training programmes, and poll industry representatives. The effort will sustain the excellent work of the Marine Genomics Europe Network of Excellence, and knowledge transfer techniques used will build on those piloted in related FP7 projects, such as MarineTT and AquaInnova. IMAQUANIM ‘Improved Immunity of Aquacultured Animals’ brochure

    The recently finalized IMAQUANIM project (CT-2005-007103: ‘Improved Immunity of Aquacultured Animals’ ; An integrated research project with 22 partners supported by the European Commission´s FP6 programme) developed a technological knowledge platform for improved immunity to infectious pathogens in the major aquacultured species in Europe (Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, sea bream, sea bass, carp, mussel and oyster). The data acquired in IMAQUANIM provide a strong technological basis for intelligent strategies to counteract known or newly emerging diseases in aquacultured fish. Highlights of the IMAQUANIM project have been collected in an easy-to-read brochure, in printed form on request or accessible via the internet. EAS-SG teaser March 2011

    This week the EAS SG want to introduce the SARNISSA, “Sustainable Aquaculture Research Networks in Sub Saharan Africa“:

    Aren’t we vaguely aware that there might be some aquaculture going on outside of Europe. Scientific publications from the American countries, shrimp from south-east Asia, unbelievable high production numbers from China, and also Sarnissa;
    And Sarnissa is all about Africa!!!
    Would you like to know how Clarias catfish are being cultured in Nigeria? Who is researching tilapia feeds and nutrition in South Africa? Or how private fish hatcheries are developing in Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire? Are you looking for expertise or work experience in a warm country? Personally, I was amazed by the amount of openess, feedback and help, that I saw within the Sarnissa community and following the discussion forum.
    Check out the (admittedly crammed) homepage (http://www.sarnissa.org/tiki-index.php), sign up for free or give the guys a shout if you are looking for experience, a semster abroad, or just a question about actually everything!
