24th Annual Texas Shrimp Farming and Marine Finfish Culture Course, 30 September - 6 October 2009, Texas, USA

Ph.D. course "Physical and biochemical methods for analysis of fish as food", 16-20 November 2009, Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark

The aim of the course is to provide insight into the state of the art of advanced laboratory techniques and methods that are recommended for analysis of fish muscle components relevant in studies of ante mortem (e.g. feed, stress) effects on fish as well as for following post mortem changes in fish. Ecosystem Modelling for Fishery Management, 8-12 March 2010, Copenhagen, Denmark

The ICES Training Programme intends to broaden our approach to fish stock and ecosystem analysis and make all relevant modelling methods available to our community. The course is planned as a five-day activity, and is intended for scientists with some prior experience with ecosystem modelling. Participants are expected to have at least a cursory familiarity with the Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) approach and software, which can be downloaded freely from www.ecopath.org. AQUA-TNET Annual Event 2009, 5-7 October 2009, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain

All AQUA-TNET members and stakeholders are invited to attend this important event to find out about the activities and results of the first year and debate the hot topics in Education and Training. Sant Feliu is a small picturesque town situated on the northern Mediterranean coast of Spain, 120 km from Barcelona and 30 km from Girona. Meeting venue and hotel will be at the same location.

PESCALEX 2 Progress meeting, Cretaquarium, Crete, Greece produced some new ideas which may be of interest to subscribers.

1.The new PESCALEX Language game is to change its format from Interactive Board Game, to Simulation Game. This will have a familiar context yet innovative format, of interest to those who have already participated in Simulation Games run by AQUATT for students (e.g., Ithaca in Glasgow). The overall aim is to demonstrate how to obtain an accurate and reliable record of disease events. Video and still materials are to be used, with visual signs of disease to be observed from video clips to aid speedy and accurate reporting of symptoms.

2. The PESCALEX Fish diseases glossary is to enlarge its scope and will include some 150 new items, mainly dealing with nutrition. These will be added to the existing glossary which will appear by the end of the propect in English, French, Spanish, Norwegian, Greek, Polish, Hungarian, Turkish and Galician.

3. The proposed new Diagnostic Tool will be tested at the Final Workshop. This innovation could prove very useful in the future.

European Association for Animal Production – FREE conference abstracts

The EAAP Secretariat is pleased to advise that, for the first time since its publication, the "Book of Abstracts" of the last Annual Meeting held in Barcelona (24-27 August 2009) is freely available for downloading at: www.eaap.org/Barcelona/Book_Abstracts.pdf The publication collects around 1200 contributions presented at the meeting that was attended by more than 1500 participants and contains abstracts related aquaculture.

EC Website on energy efficiency in fisheries

In May 2006, DG MARE organised a conference on energy efficiency in fisheries. One of the conclusions of the conference was the usefulness of setting a website on energy efficiency in fisheries with the aim to disseminate information on this topic and share experiences. First probiotic authorised for use in aquaculture in the European Union

Lallemand Animal Nutrition is pleased to announce that the European Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health has voted for the authorization of its probiotic, Bactocell® (lactic acid bacteria strain Pediococcus acidilactici CNCM MA18/5M), for use as a zootechnical feed additive in salmonids and shrimp. Bactocell therefore becomes the first probiotic authorized for such use in aquaculture in the European Union. More information can be found at www.lallemandanimalnutrition.com

Studies show effects of acidification on marine ecosystems  

The future of several key marine organisms is severely threatened by the increasing acidification of oceans. Two partly EU-funded studies now published in the open access journal Biogeosciences lend emphasis to previous warnings from scientists worldwide concerning this secondary effect of excessive carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.To read  more click here.
