New MSc Program in Aquatic Science and Technology, September 2009, Technical University of Denmark

The new MSc program offers a unique combination of biology, mathematics and technology and addresses global challenges in climate, environment and food resources. The Regional European Crayfish Workshop: Future of Native Crayfish in Europe, 7-10 September 2009, Písek (Czech Republic)

Ph.D. course “Physical and biochemical methods for analysis of fish as food”, 16-20 November 2009, Kgs. Lyngby (Denmark)

The aim of the course is to provide insight into the state of the art of advanced laboratory techniques and methods that are recommended for analysis of fish muscle components relevant in studies of ante mortem (e.g. feed, stress) effects on fish as well as for following post mortem changes in fish. Aquaculture Europe 2009 Plenary Speakers

Research has underpinned the significant development of aquaculture over the last three decades and Europe has been a leader. As aquaculture continues to develop, research will undergo fundamental change. Aquaculture Europe 2009 will address this challenge and will provide an international forum to discuss latest research initiatives and new research frontiers. The plenary speakers have now been announced and at present, the conference has received more than 350 abstracts from 42 countries and attendance is expected to be around 500.

International Council for the Exploration of the Sea announces two new reports

Dr. Edouard Delcroix 2010 - Marine Environment and Human Health International Scientific prize

This international scientific prize of €25,000 will be awarded by the Flanders Marine Institute, Belgium, to a researcher or a research team to reward an original scientific study on the marine environment within the context of potential medical applications.  The prize has been established in honour of Dr. Edouard Delcroix (1891-1973), Beligan orthopaedic surgeon and pioneer in thalassotherapy.

FAO releases technical guidelines on deep sea fishing

On the first-ever UN World Oceans Day FAO has published a set of technical guidelines aimed at helping the fisheries sector reduce its impacts on fragile deep-sea fish species and ecosystems. The guidelines provide a framework that countries can use, individually and in the context of regional fisheries management organizations, to manage deep sea fisheries (DSF) in high-seas areas outside of national jurisdictions.

Call for ASC 2010 Theme Session proposals

The International Council for Exploration of the Seas (ICES) Science Committee (SCICOM) is inviting Theme Session proposals for the 2010 ICES Annual Science Conference to be held in Nantes, France. An overview of theme session proposals received to date can be found here. Theme Session proposals should be linked to one of the five new Science Steering Groups (in line with the ICES Science Plan) or to ACOM. New Theme Session proposals (or updates to existing ones) should be sent to tsproposals@ices.dk, using the template available at http://www.ices.dk/iceswork/bulletin.asp#2010, well in advance of the ASC SCICOM meeting in Berlin and preferably before Friday 14 August 2009.

First call for access to ASSEMBLE Marine Infrastructure sites

ASSEMBLE is an EU FP7 research infrastructure initiative comprising a network of marine research stations. Access is provided to a comprehensive set of coastal marine ecosystems, to research vessels, state-of-the-art experimental facilities and to a wide variety of marine organisms; either on-site or by shipment. First call for applications is now open. You can apply for on-site and remote access to the ASSEMBLE infrastructure sites for the period Dec 2009 - May 2010. Deadline September 15, 2009.
