Student Workshop 2004 Update, Glasgow, Scotland, 19-22nd May 2004

The Aquaculture Student Workshop is taking place alongside the Aquaculture International Exhibition at the SECC in Glasgow, 19th-22nd May 2004.

The workshop is supported financially by the European Commission (Directorate General Fisheries), and has been designed and organised by AquaTT in collaboration with Fish Farming International (Heighway), Gent University and Aqualex Multimedia Consortium (AMC) Ltd.

The event has stimulated much interest, with more than 65 applications for the 47 places available. The selected participants, predominantly MSc and PhD students, represent 19 different nationalities and 24 different Educational Institutions.

The workshop will take place over three days incorporating keynote presentations from leading experts in specific industry fields. Day 1 will comprise presentations on current industry issues surrounding European policy, food safety, ethical production, sustainability and socio-economic effects, with facilitation for debate between speaker and participant. Day 2 presentations are themed to building up the student's professional skills base, and include among others, excellence in scientific papers and oral presentations, networking skills, gathering and collating information.

The innovative practical element, known as "Ithaca Island" will take place over two days, and is intended to make the participants consider every possible aspect of developing aquaculture businesses in harmony with other water users. It will draw on the participants’ ability to operate in teams, to delegate and negotiate, to gather and collate information and to make a presentation to the group of participants and speakers and further justify their position through debate. "Ithaca Island" will be mentored by Dr. Denis Lacroix, Ifremer, France who has extensive expertise in running role play events at Gent University.

The third and final day, will put all previous theory and practice into context, with a day long excursion to a number of aquaculture installations in operation in the local catchment area.
For further information on the event click on www.piscestt.com, or visit the AquaTT stand L23 in the aquaculture exhibition hall.

Education Through Research - The University Concept

A panel discussion on "Education through research - the university concept" will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 12 May.

The discussion is intended to illuminate the role of research in engineering higher education, and to discuss to what extend it corresponds to the Bologna Process. Panellists will include representatives from the Ministry of Science and Research in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the European Commission, research organisations and industry.

It is hoped that the discussion will enable the drafting of a roadmap for university-level institutions, describing how they can specifically contribute to the development of a European Higher Education Area.

The event is being organised by Aachen University and the Representation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia to the European Union.

AquaTT and partners submitted proposal for Short Training Courses, April 2004

AquaTT in collaboration with Universitites around Europe submitted a Marie Curie proposal on the 20th April 2004 for 6 Short Training Courses and 1 student conference. The proposal was intended to continue the methodology from the past series of Aqualabs courses held in 2001.

The target audience for Marie Curie events is young researchers.

The 6 courses submitted relate to some of the current needs within the European industry. Each course is headed by researchers at the leading edge of their field.

Each course intends to provide thorough training in specific areas that have direct application to research and potential impact on industry. The courses have all been succinctly designed using the proven AQUALAB methodology - consistent structure, implementation, management and evaluation for all events. Training will be provided using a combination of a distance learning element, traditional lectures, practicals and field trips. Each course will consist of three overlapping and complimentary phases.

Aqualab 1: Quality of Fish Products, University College Cork, Aquaculture Development Centre (ADC), Ireland
Aqualab 2: Molecular Biology and Ecology in Aquaculture, University of Kuopio, Institue of Biotechnology, Finland
Aqualab 3: Design and Operation of Recirculation Technologies, Wageningen University, The Netherlands
Aqualab 4: Aquatic Animal Disease Diagnostics, University of Stirling, Institute of Aquaculture, UK
Aqualab 5: Aquaculture and the Environment, The Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation (HAKI), Hungary
Aqualab 6: Fish Welfare, University of Insubria, Department of Structural and Functional Biology (DBSF), Aquaculture Unit, Italy
Aqualab Student Conference, to be run by AquaTT

The courses are planned to run for 5-7 days, having ~30 participants and 5-7 international experts teaching.

It is hoped to hear a result later in the year and if funded, the courses will start in early in 2005.

The proposal will be in stiff competition with all other proposals submited. Under the first call in 2003 there was only a 10% success rate, 31 funded out of 316 eligible proposals exceeding the minimum threshold. AquaTT submitted a proposal for aqualabs under the first call and obtained a very high mark of 86/100 (4 or 4.5 out of 5 on every evaluation catergory) but unfortunately was not selected for funding. It is hoped to go one better this year.

If you are interested in developing short training courses or sponsoring courses please contact the AquaTT secretariat: aquatt@aquatt.ie Â

More Contributions Requested - "Aquaculture for Non-Experts" Course Material

This course is being designed as an introduction to aquaculture. It will be collated to give "non-experts" an overview of the industry. "Non-experts" in this context refers to those not currently working in the industry on a daily basis. It has been specifically designed to target individuals working in support organisations that in some way interact with the aquaculture industry in their daily dealings (civil servants, planning officials, development agencies, NGO's, etc).

The original concept was developed due to the widely felt opinion that many of the individuals who make decisions regarding the fate of the aquaculture industry do not have a comprehensive overview of the industry and how it works. It is hoped that by participating in this course individuals would gain a better insight into how the industry is run and therefore be able to make more informed decisions regarding its fate.

The course is intended to present a clear picture of the daily workings of the sector in a short amount of time. This includes overviews as varied as the legislative aspects down to the individual lifecycles of species. The course in no way attempts to cover all issues related to the sector but it does provide a valuable overview and sources of further information.

All material will be available online for free.

While in this course there are presentations from individuals, the "course" has been designed so that speakers could be replaced by others where required for any one event. Where possible alternative speakers are suggested. In addition each group of participants will be different and thus in the context of an event there will of course be time factored for Q & A's.

Contributions of existing material is requested.

Format: PowerPoint presentations, scientific papers, course material, graphics, diagrams, photos etc.
Topics: Lifecycles of species, aquaculture technology, monitoring regimes, environmental impact of farming, consumer reports, socioeconomic reports, legislation, etc. (list is not exclusive)

All contributions will be credited to the authors. All powerpoints provided can be viewed but will not be downloadable thus protecting copyright of the author.

The course will be developed by collecting materials and past presentations given by experts and placing them in a structured order to convey a current overview of the industry.

If you would like to contribute material please contact the Editor, David Murphy (AquaTT Manager) david@aquatt.ie
