Training Program on Sustainable Use of Genetic Resources, Applications to Environmentally Friendly Aquaculture and Fisheries, 4-16 April 2009, Abbassa (Egypt)
The course objective is to provide useful information on genetic resources and the means of its conservation during programs of genetic enhancement for aquaculture and/or stock enrichment in natural waters. The course will focus on the use of genetic approaches in enhancing food security without degradation of genetic resources. The course is designed for fish hatchery/farm managers, research staff and technicians who are working in genetic enhancement, stock enriching or genetic research programs.
Fisheries data collection and analysis, 6 - 24 April 2009, Wageningen (the Netherlands)
In
this course participants will learn to appraise what information is
essential (both socio-economic and fisheries science information).
Techniques to collect socio-economic information will be taught, and
participants are guided to develop a more analytical attitude towards
fisheries data and catch/effort information.
Professional training course: ‘Design of breeding programs for aquaculture’, 21-23 April 2009, Wageningen (the Netherlands)
The
aim of this 3-day course is to provide people working in the field of
fish (re)production with the knowledge that will enable them to design
a simple breeding program, evaluate the costs and benefits of a
breeding program, and to discuss sophisticated breeding programs with
professional breeding organizations. Education will be a mix of
lectures and computer practical’s. Participants will be asked to design
a breeding program (in small groups) of their own choice, which will be
plenary discussed.
Training Program on “Hatchery and Farming Technologies for Nile Tilapia and African Catfish”, 12-21 May 2009, Abbassa, Sharkia, (Egypt)
The course is designed for aquaculture hatchery and farm operators & managers, researchers, technicians, and extension workers who seek hands-on training in modern aquaculture research and management techniques especially what relate to tilapia and African catfish. The course objective is to provide up-to-date information on production methods shown to be reliable in the field and to demonstrate updated technology for mass production of tilapia and catfish seeds as well as its farming under different farming conditions.
Workshop on Game Theoretic Applications in Fisheries, 4 - 6 June 2009, Esbjerg (Denmark)
The workshop will include both theoretical and empirical considerations in game theoretical modelling in fisheries economics and management. Emphasis will be given on empirical work and there will be hands-on where the participants work with models. The workshop is mainly targeted to researchers in fisheries economics, but is open to other researchers from other disciplines as well. Deadline for enrolment is 13th May 2009.
MSc programmes in Aquaculture related subjects, University of Stirling UK
A series of multi-disciplinary 11-month Masters Programmes in aquaculture is available at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling UK, from September 2009. SAAS and Fishmongers Society studentships for EU students are available for the following programmes; Sustainable Aquaculture, Aquaculture and the Environment, Aquaculture Development, Aquaculture Nutrition, Aquaculture Business Management and Aquaculture Systems. These programmes encourage flexible learning through a modular design. Taught modules may also be taken individually as short courses for continuing professional development (CPD).
New MSc Program in Aquatic Science and Technology, Denmark
The new MSc program offers a unique combination of biology, mathematics and technology and addresses global challenges in climate, environment and food resources. The program starts in September 2009 and is being developed collaboratively by the Technical University of Denmark and University of Copenhagen.
MSc in Marine Resource Management, Heriot-Watt University, Orkney (UK)
This 12-month full time MSc course considers the sustainable development, use, conservation and management of marine resources. The semester starts in September 2009.
PhD course in Aquatic Microbial and Molecular Ecology, 3-21 August 2009, University of Southern Denmark
A PhD course in Aquatic Microbial and Molecular Ecology is being offered by the University of Southern Denmark, through the international Ph.D. school SOAS (www.soas.dk). The tentative application deadline is 15 May 2008. Applications for travel support are accepted from foreign students.
AQUA-TNET2 – benefiting the education sector in Aquaculture and related fields
AQUA-TNET, the Thematic Network in the field of Aquaculture, Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management, is growing in activity and relevance. The second phase (2008-11), giving the network the excellent opportunity to build upon the first phase and continue this long running network (1996-2008), is now actively started up and the new programme will continue the important work of helping aquaculture and related sectors to contribute to the creation of a European Higher Education Area. The dedicated core groups are currently holding their first core group meetings, in which they will set the agenda for the rest of the project, and work on their core deliverables for the benefit of the whole education sector in the covered sectors.
The partners of the work packages on ‘New Generic Skills and Competences’ and ‘Multilingual Issues in International Cooperation & Lifelong Learning’ met in Aberdeen at the end of March 2009, where they discussed amongst other topics; language skills, delivery method for skills teaching, and cultural and academic discipline-related issues such as awareness of other viewpoints and ability to speak the same “language”. The other work packages currently running e.g. on MSc and PhD Programmes and Mobility and Innovation in Teaching, will come together in the next few weeks, also in preparation for the first annual event that will take place this summer.

March 8 2009 University of Crete, Greece: The Coordinator, Mrs Margaret Eleftheriou, gave a presentation of the PESCALEX project and Language Game at the 1st international Conference on Language for Specific Purposes which took place at the University of Crete on March 8-10. The Game was greeted with great enthusiasm by all participants. Click here to see the poster version of the Language Game.
19-20 March 2009 Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, Scotland: At the meeting between AQUARK and the University of Stirling partners, the need for the adaptation of the Fish/Shellfish Pathology materials and the difficulties caused by the loss of to Prof. Okumu's expertise in fish haematology, led to discussions as to how the Diagnostic Tool could be used, possibly as a Diagnostic Tool/Language Game online. The possibility of developing the Language game as a cellphone tool was also raised.
March 24-25 Aberdeen Scotland: At a meeting of the Language WP of the SOCRATES Thematic Network AQUATNET, the PESCALEX Language Game was presented and suggestions made as to how it could be further adapted as an induction tool for student exchanges.
European Aquaculture Technology & Innovation Platform (EATIP) Progress Report
The 3rd Stakeholders Meeting of the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform (EATIP) was held on the 3rd February 2009 in Ghent. More than 95 participants were present for this event, which was combined with the first General Assembly of the EATIP, following its registration as a non-profit Association in December 2008. Presentations were made for each Thematic Area of EATIP, namely:
Product quality & consumer safety and health
Technology and systems
Managing the biological lifecycle
Sustainable feed production
Integration with the environment
Knowledge management
Aquatic animal health and welfare

COST-Action FA0801: Critical success factors for fish larval production in European Aquaculture: a multidisciplinary network (LARVANET)
For the 2008-2009 budget, LarvaNet has still options to grant up to 10 Short Term Scientific Missions (STSM), related to the goals of the Network. This offer is a unique opportunity for scientists to visit other research groups, to learn new technologies or to realise a short project. In case you are interested, please react very quickly as it may take one month to get approval and the short time mission must be ended latest May 31, 2009.
A new web-base information system for aquaculture development: The Regional Aquaculture Information System (RAIS)
A new Web site has been established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) under the aegis of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) to facilitate the exchange of aquaculture information in the Gulf area among regional experts and stakeholders, and to promote and develop a sustainable aquaculture industry.
The Future of Food seminar, took place in Brussels at 28th of November 2008. It focused on the growing gap between exploding consumer demands and the limited natural resources. The seminar resulted in a number of very interesting conclusions and leads for further debate.
European Union announces a new Maritime Strategy for the 21st century
The European Union has announced a new maritime strategy that integrates all strands of power in the maritime sector. Citing the fact that the seas provide the EU with five million jobs, food, and ways to move goods, it identifies the sea as a vital natural resource and a key for economic growth.
CPMR policy position paper: The European strategy for marine and maritime research
Further to the European Commission's communication of 3 September 2008, "A European Strategy for Marine and Maritime Research", the CPMR has adopted a policy position.
Study on legal aspects of maritime monitoring & surveillance data
The European Commission believes that a better integration of the EU's maritime monitoring and surveillance capabilities - both between different authorities in the same country and across borders - could greatly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of such authorities. A study, analysing legal barriers to the achieving of this ambition, has indicated that any measures to improve matters must pay particular attention to confidentiality and the protection of personal data.
BACK to top FAO/WHO Expert Consultation on the risks and benefits of fish consumption: call for experts and information & data
FAO/WHO are planning an expert consultation on the risks and benefits of fish consumption for January 2010 and are seeking i) scientific experts to participate - specifically looking at the risks associated with methylmercury and dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in fish and the health benefits of fish consumption and ii) information and data to submit - in particular relevant recent studies and benefit/risk assessments. Deadline is 15 June 2009.
The EC funded SUDEVAB project which is researching various issues related to abalone aquaculture in Europe is having a dissemination day at the Galway Bay Hotel, on Tuesday, May 19th. Workshop of the EAS-Student Group at Aquaculture Europe 2009 (Norway)
The EAS Student Group will organise a workshop on the 15th of August within the AE2009 conference in Trondheim, Norway. Hot topics for students and young professionals in the aquaculture sector will be covered, such as: Time Planning and Project Management during PhD Study, Preparing an Effective Poster Presentation, Industry vs Academic Jobs, AQUA-TNET – International Education Opportunities for Students, and others. Participants must be registered for the AE2009. Ten travel grants will be awarded to EAS-SG members (deadline for application: 15th of April).
We welcome submissions from current students interested in presenting their views and experiences on the industry and education in Europe. The AquaTT Training News newsletter reaches almost 4500 recipients on a monthly basis and will serve as a good forum to get your ideas out to the differing sectors involved in the industry.
