Training course: FP7 Financial and Project Management, 13 – 14 November 2008, Budapest (Hungary)

FP7 Grant Agreement Negotiations are tougher and more stressful than before. Deadlines are strict and partners are sometimes uncooperative. This is only the beginning of FP7 project management. The financial rules and reporting procedures have been modified and audits are playing an increasing role. The FP7 Financial and Project Management course will help ensure successful implementation of your FP7 projects and will also give added insight into how to successfully handle EC and partner communication.

Training Course:  Fish Health Management, 16-27 November 2008, WorldFish Regional Center at Abbassa (Egypt)

This Fish Health Management training course is designed for fish hatchery/farm managers, technicians, veterinarians, paraveterinarian professionals, extension agents, food safety specialists and researchers. The focus of the course will be on warm water fish, including both freshwater and marine species.

Training Programme on Regional Ocean Governance, 16 November – 19 December  2008, Malta

The theme of the Regional Ocean Governance course draws upon the conduct of maritime affairs in line with the Lisbon Strategy, targeting the Millennium Development Goals and building upon a holistic and integrated maritime policy following the principles enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It focuses on the linkages between the natural, social and economic sciences to the development of sustainable ocean governance, and on the research-management interface that can render governance operable. The Course stresses the inter-linkages of multi-disciplinary inputs, and on the support of technology to enable the effective achievement of ocean management and sustainable development.

Ph.D. course “Physical and biochemical methods for analysis of fish as food”, 17 - 21 November 2008, Kgs. Lyngby (Denmark)

Eating quality of the end product is an issue of increased importance in aquaculture. Research in this area often requires measurement of the different constituents of the fish. In this context the Ph.D. course in “Physical and biochemical methods for analysis of fish as food” has been announced. The course takes place at DTU Aqua, Dept. of Seafood Research, Søltofts Plads, Building 221, Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark. The aim of the course is to provide insight into the state of the art of advanced laboratory techniques and methods that are recommended for analysis of fish muscle components relevant in studies of ante mortem (e.g. feed, stress) effects on fish as well as for following post mortem changes in fish. The course comprises 5 days of exercises.

Advanced Course: Fisheries restocking and stock enhancement, 15-19 December 2008, Zaragoza (Spain)

The Advanced Course "Fisheries restocking and stock enhancement" aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required for assessing where and when restocking or stock enhancement can contribute to fisheries management goals, and for developing and managing such initiatives effectively. The course is designed around an enhancement fisheries system framework, emphasizing how outcomes of enhancement are dependent on a combination of attributes of the fish stock, fishing techniques, aquaculture production, habitat, stakeholder characteristics, markets, and institutional arrangements.

Advanced course: Seafood safety management based on risk analysis, 19-23 January 2009, Zaragoza (Spain)

The Advanced Course "Seafood safety management" will provide participants an insight into the process of risk analysis and its application in seafood safety management. By the end of the course, the participants will:
•    Have a sound knowledge of the process of risk analysis, together with its applications and limitations.
•    Be aware of international regulations governing food safety and risk analysis.
•    Gain experience in applying tools of risk analysis in the seafood processing industry.
•    Develop skills in the implementation of risk analysis in seafood inspection.

Towards participatory fisheries governance, 16 March – 03 April 2009, Wageningen (the Netherlands)

In this training course cases of fisheries co-management will be analysed to determine the conditions for success. The implications of choosing for this approach will be examined, and the toolbox available to the fisheries manager to regulate fishing effort will be discussed.

Government-led, centralised fisheries management has only been successful in some large-scale fisheries. It has seldom been successfully applied in small-scale fisheries, particulary not in countries with a large small-scale fishing sector and with limited means and manpower for management. A greater role of resource users in design, implementation and enforcement of fishing management regulations (the co-management approach) has been advocated as a way forward.

Fisheries data collection and analysis,  6-24 April 2009, Wageningen (the Netherlands)

Information about fishers, catch, effort, fish stocks, processing and trade form the basis for policy choices, management plans and evaluation. When not the sector, but the whole aquatic ecosystem is the object to be managed, also information about the impacts of fishing on other, non-target components of the aquatic ecosystem needs to be collected and analysed.

In this course participants will learn to appraise what information is essential (both socio-economic and fisheries science information). Techniques to collect socio-economic information will be taught, and participants are guided to develop a more analytical attitude towards fisheries data and catch/effort information.

Collaboration

AquaTT – unique partner in FP7 Research Programme

AquaTT is a unique non-profit company supporting the European aquaculture industry with services and facilitation. For more than 16 years, AquaTT has been a key partner in projects funded by the European Commission under a range of programmes, applying best practice in its leadership and participation.

In the 6th Framework Programme AquaTT participated in several research projects, adding value through the supply of essential services that every research initiative requires. These knowledge management services include dissemination, validation, technology transfer & translation and technical training coordination, customised to each project.

AquaTT’s competence has been recognised on an international level by the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform (EATiP) where David Murphy, AquaTT Managing Director, serves as a facilitator for the thematic strand, Knowledge Management. AquaTT facilitates effective interaction between key stakeholders and manages knowledge generated out of European research, with the intention of ensuring maximum exploitation.

AquaTT is now actively seeking to be involved in FP7 Research projects.  As a partner we will be committed to foster and implement project activities with utilisation and exploitation of results in mind. AquaTT will ensure that research projects implement best practice in knowledge management for the project duration, identify & prioritise new knowledge generated out of projects, and design appropriate mechanisms for maximum exploitation.  Activities will be coordinated in parallel to the EATiP vision and its activities, providing a direct channel between RTD projects and the EATiP.

FP7 has prioritised Knowledge Management as an important element of any research application criteria. As a result, AquaTT is promoting its services to interested consortia.

The Lindsay Laird Student Award for innovation in aquaculture

The first Lindsay Laird Student Award for innovation in aquaculture was won by Ms Sabine Keuter of the University of Hamburg for her poster, "Inhibitory effects of plastics and nitrate on nitrification in aquacultural biofilters". It is entirely fitting that the award, set up by AquaTT in memory of an outstanding individual whose achievements are an inspiration to us all, was presented by Dr Selina Stead, President of the European Aquaculture Society, at the EAS International Conference in Krakow, September 2008.

At the time of her untimely death from cancer in 2001, Dr Lindsay Laird was a Senior Teaching Fellow in the Department of Zoology at the University of Aberdeen. However, in no way did she conform to the stereotyped image of the academic research scientist, though her many and varied publications, as well as her work as series editor of the Ellis Horwood Aquaculture and Fisheries Support Series, her translations and her joint editorship of Handbook of Salmon Farming demonstrate her international academic standing.

Right from the start of her career she worked along with the expanding Scottish aquaculture industry, on different aspects of salmon farming, later developing the concept of a green label for farmed salmon and defining the standards for Organic Farm Salmon, becoming the first Chairman of the Organic Fish Producers' Association in 1998. As scientific adviser to the Shetland Salmon Farmers' Association, she was extremely active during the turmoil caused by the Braer oil tanker episode to the islands' salmon industry, before serving as Vice-Chairman of the Scottish Executive Fisheries Committee. She also served on the Board of Directors of the European Aquaculture Society from 1994, till 2000, when she retired for health reasons.

Lindsay Laird was a remarkable woman, moving easily between the rival spheres of teaching, research and industry, and excelling in all three. A high achiever, relishing being the first with the latest, she nevertheless hugely enjoyed her contacts with people at all levels in all three areas. She was generous with her ideas, triggering numerous research projects as colleagues approached her always open office door. She virtually ran an unofficial one-woman employment agency handling enquiries from fish farms looking for personnel or advising students or ex-students.

In the words of Professor Priede, Lindsay's husband: "Lindsay Laird will not be forgotten by the many whose lives she touched".

AQUA-TNET shows highlights at Annual Event 2008

AQUA-TNET, the Socrates-Erasmus Thematic Network in the field of Aquaculture, Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management held its 2nd Annual Event in Krakow (Poland), in conjunction with EAS2008. Each Work Package presented the highlights from their activities over the past three years, which showed how much the network has achieved during that time. A PhD database, with links to full Ph.D. manuscripts, abstracts, related articles and author information, was officially launched. The AQUA-TNET Ph.D. portal is constructed as a valuable information and research tool, gathering scientific and background information on finished doctoral research work throughout Europe. AQUA-TNET members are also working on an online database for all Master Programmes and Courses in the sector, which will be expanded fully in the new phase AQUA-TNET 2008-11. Other highlights presented were the TUNING template for the Aquaculture sector, giving amongst other aspects, European degree profiles, typical occupations in the sector, and level cycle descriptors based on learning outcomes and competences, and a database of potential mobility exchanges, including recommendations and a good practice guide.

Based on the work done in the vertical Work Packages, representatives from Industry, Research and Consumers had the opportunity to comment and express their practices and needs to the academic community. The group discussion regarding whether higher education institutions are able to meet the lifelong learning needs of an innovative aquaculture industry, showed that Higher Education Institutions are still uncertain with regard to their role in the provision of lifelong learning within industry sector - whatever this role might be!  This is an issue that might merit further consideration.

As AQUA-TNET activities increase, so does its relevance and influence. With the recently approved Community co-funding the network now has an excellent opportunity to build upon the first phase and continue this long-running network (1996-2008) in AQUA-TNET2008-11. The new programme will allow the network to continue its important work of helping the sectors covered to contribute to the creation of a European Higher Education Area. The renewal will allow the network to review priorities and activities and make any improvements necessary to help meet the needs of all stakeholders.

New 2008-2010 Board of Directors of the European Aquaculture Society

At its General Assembly, held on September 16 at the occasion of Aquaculture Europe 2008 in Krakow, Poland, members of the European Aquaculture Society approved its new Board of Directors. The new 2008-2010 Board is comprised of President Selina Stead, President-Elect (becoming President in 2010) Yves Harache, Treasurer Peter Bossier and Board members Sachi Kaushik, Kjell Inge Reitan and Magdolena Trenovszki. Outgoing President Laszlo Varadi remains on the Board as Past President in an advisory role.

Commission puts forward marine and maritime research strategy

The European Commission has set out its plans to strengthen links between the marine and maritime research communities. The Commission hopes its new European Strategy for Marine and Maritime Research will enhance the conservation of the fragile marine environment while facilitating the development of maritime activities such as shipping and fisheries.

'When it comes to major challenges such as reconciling maritime economic activities with the preservation of marine ecosystems, science and technology can play a major role,' stated EU Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik. 'The Strategy for marine and maritime research should, therefore, be seen as one of the pioneer actions for the implementation of the European Research Area, which promotes scientific excellence and development of cutting-edge innovations in Europe through better integration of existing research efforts and development of new capacities.'

The European Research Council (ERC) is leading the way in the provision of financial support to some of Europe's finest researchers. Funding provided by the ERC, a total of EUR 7.5 billion, not only supports research but further stimulates pioneering research in groundbreaking new areas, areas that may not have been financially viable without ERC support. The ERC has increased their funding and is also funding junior scientists through the ERC Starting Grant Scheme.

The inventory of the European Marine Research Funded Projects (EurOcean_MaP), compiled by EurOcean, has been updated with new projects. It now includes a complete list of the FP6 funded marine projects as well as from other funding programs such as COST, EUREKA, EUROCORES (ESF), INTERREG III, LIFE and SMAP. EurOcean-MaP includes presently 751 projects.

CALL: ESF call for Research Networking Programmes

An ESF Research Networking Programme is a networking activity bringing together nationally funded research activities for four to five years, to address a major scientific issue or a science-driven topic of research infrastructure, at the European level with the aim of advancing the frontiers of science. A successful Programme proposal must show high scientific quality and also demonstrate added value by being carried out at a European level rather than by individual research groups at the national level.

Deadline for submitting proposals under the 2008 RNP Call is 23 October 2008, 16:00 CET.
