Open workshop by FASTFISH (during EAS2008) - On farm assessment of fish welfare, 16 September 2008, Cracow (Poland)

The main goal of the FASTFISH project is to develop the first database and expert system for farm welfare and stress level assessment in farmed fish at all ontogenetic stages. A central part in this assessment will be validated behavioural stress level indicators. The main focus areas for the search for potential indicators will be feeding motivation and behavioural control mechanisms. Ph.D. course “Physical and biochemical methods for analysis of fish as food”, 17 - 21 November 2008, Kgs. Lyngby (Denmark)

Eating quality of the end product is an issue of increased importance in aquaculture. Research in this area often requires measurement of the different constituents of the fish. In this context we here announce a Ph.D. course in “Physical and biochemical methods for analysis of fish as food”. The course takes place 17th – 21st November 2008 at DTU Aqua, Dept. of Seafood Research, Søltofts Plads, Building 221, Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark. The aim of the course is to provide insight into the state of the art of advanced laboratory techniques and methods that are recommended for analysis of fish muscle components relevant in studies of ante mortem (e.g. feed, stress) effects on fish as well as for following post mortem changes in fish. The course comprises 5 days of exercises.

VALLA at EQF Implementation Conference

VALLA – Validation of All Lifelong Learning in Aquaculture - attended the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning (EQF) Implementation Conference in Brussels on 3-4 June 2008. The European Qualifications Framework was recently adopted formally by the European Parliament and the Council as a Recommendation. At this high-level Conference, stakeholders from across the EU were set to discuss how to best implement this new scheme, which aims to enhance mobility by facilitating the transparency of qualifications across the EU. The first EQF implementation conference gathered some 230 representatives of national authorities, social partners, industry sectors and stakeholders' organisations in Brussels.

Ján Figel', European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, who closed the event, said "the EQF is an important step in increasing the transparency of the credentials that learners and workers present when they are looking for a job or a place of study anywhere in Europe. The proposal to set the EQF up is in place; now it is the job of the Member States' authorities to implement it, so that by 2012, all new certificates and qualifications issued in the EU can feature a mention of one of the eight Reference Levels in the EQF system."

VALLA, coordinated by AquaTT, is one of the EQF projects selected for EC funding to test the EQF. For more information on the project please contact David Murphy at david@aquatt.ie or look at the VALLA website: www.vallaproject.com

Atlas of the European Seas and Oceans

The 27 EU Member States have shores on two oceans and four seas. Their jurisdictional waters stretch from sub-tropical waters to areas approaching the North Pole. With the growing importance of maritime affairs on the political agenda of Member States, a new political geography has been created. Supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, Juan Luis Suárez de Vivero with Juan Carlos Rodríguez Mateos have developed an Atlas of the European Seas and Oceans to record this new geography in maps and graphs. In addition to territory-related issues, the Atlas includes a summary of all the main marine uses and activities from a European perspective.

New era dawns for world’s oceans via EPOCA

Last June, the EU's largest research consortium to combat ocean acidification was launched. The European Project on Ocean Acidification (EPOCA) combines over 100 scientists from 27 organisations in 9 countries. Its aim is to document ocean acidification and investigate its impact on biological processes. Based on this information the project can then predict its consequences for the next 100 years, and advise policy-makers on potential thresholds or tipping points that should not be exceeded.
