Histopathology Workshop, 19 – 23 May 2008, Weymouth (UK)

The Histopathology Workshop workshop will place significant emphasis on "hands-on" practical training and the diagnosis of diseases and pathological changes. It will cover many aspects of disease and pathology in fish and shellfish depending on interest including: Salmonids, Cyprinids, Mariculture spp. and wild marine fish pathology, Molluscs and Crustacea.

(Shell)Fish Immunology Workshop 10th anniversary, 22 – 27 June 2008, Wageningen University, The Netherlands

The objective of the present workshop is to provide participants with advanced knowledge, both theoretical and practical, on the immune system of fish and shellfish. Emphasis will be placed on innate and acquired, cellular immunity, but also on immune modulation and future developments in fish immunology.

Full time Aquaculture Course, September 2008 – February 2009, BIM, Ireland

This full time course operates from the BIM Regional Fisheries Centre, Castletownbere, Co. Cork in Ireland and includes modules on finfish, shellfish  and seaweed on growing, hatchery production of fish and seafood hygiene management. This course will help you find work in an existing aquaculture business, offer progression to further training at third level or assist you in setting up your own aqua business.

Summer School on Advances in Mediterranean Aquaculture, 1 - 15 September 2008, Alghero (Italy)

Aims of this course are to update advanced students, post doc and stakeholders already sharing an advanced background on fish biology and intensive aquaculture, about newly acquired technologies, practical model’s approach to the environmental impact forecast, on the animal welfare focused husbandry protocols. Relevance will be given to the new molecular approach for the assessment of fish welfare and physio-pathological conditions, for a global quality focused production. New feeds and vaccine progresses, beside to innovative marketing strategies and “on farm” practices will be part of the teaching program as well.

International Master in Fisheries economics and management, Barcelona (Spain)

The objective of the Master is to provide high level specialisation in issues related to the economics and management of the fishing activity. The Master is developed over two academic years on a full-time basis [120 credits, following the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)], and is structured in two parts.

MBA in International Seafood Management, 2008 – 2009, Grimsby Institute (United Kingdom)

The Grimsby Institute (United Kingdom) is launching a new MBA program in International Seafood Management this fall. Collaboration

AQUA-TNET represented at WAS2008 in Korea (19 - 23 May 2008)

AQUA-TNET, the European Thematic Network in the field of aquaculture, fisheries and aquatic resources management, will give a presentation at the World Aquaculture Conference 2008 in Busan (Korea). Work Package coordinator John Bostock from the University of Stirling (UK) will present during the session Education, Extension, and Technology Transfer, on Tuesday, May 20, at 12:10 PM.

Aqua-RET 3rd partner meeting

Aqua-RET (Aquatic Renewable Energy Technologies) held its third successful partner meeting in March, in Athens. The consortium are busy compiling material for the development of 5 modules based on aquatic renewable energy technologies. The website will include an e-learning section incorporating newly designed Aqua-RET animations and graphics and a resource section where users will be able to download lots of useful material such as manuals, posters and graphics. AquaTT appointed as Co-Facilitator of EATP’s Knowledge Management Thematic Area

The Board of Directors of the EATP (European Aquaculture Technology Platform), after receiving about 50 proposals, has appointed all Chairs and Facilitators for the 7 Thematic Areas. David Murphy, Manager of AquaTT, has been appointed facilitator of the Knowledge Management Thematic Area, together with Karl Almås, President of SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture. Chair of this group will be Luc Grisec, Director of AAH R&D, Intervet.

Other Thematic Areas within the EATP are 1). Product quality & human safety and health; 2). Technology and systems; 3). Managing the biological life cycle; 4). Sustainable feed production; 5). Integration with the environment; 6). Aquatic animal health and welfare

EATP’s chairman, Gustavo Larrazábal, said in this connection: “In my view this is a strong and balanced group of very competent people and I am looking forward to cooperate with them in upholding the European aquaculture sector as the most competitive an innovative in the world, producing good products for the consumers, and creating wealth and jobs in our costal zones.”

Final CONSENSUS Conference: Towards sustainable fish farming (press release)

“Over a hundred and twenty stakeholders from 19 countries met in Oostende, Belgium on April 24 – 25, to review a series of sustainability indicators drawn up for fish and shellfish farming in Europe over the past three years by the CONSENSUS project – a multi-stakeholder platform for sustainable aquaculture in Europe. CONSENSUS is an EU Sixth Framework initiative, driven by major European stakeholders representing consumer interests, aquaculture producers, aquatic feed suppliers, environmental, animal health and welfare groups as well as from various levels of legislative bodies in both the EU and Member States”
