Collaboration

PROFET POLICY workshop: Atlantic fisheries, Marine cage & Shellfish culture, 13 - 14 September, Dublin (Ireland)

The Irish Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation (KFO) hosted the third PROFET POLICY Meeting and Workshop in Dublin on September 13th and 14th 2007. The workshop, with the theme "Technical Conservation Measures", was held as part of the Sixth Framework Programme PROFET Policy project and was the third of nine such workshops scheduled to be held throughout Europe. During the course of the workshop M Ernesto Penas-Lado and M François Theret of DG Fish outlined the Commission position on the current state and future direction of Technical Measures. They admitted the failure of existing measures to protect fisheries as intended and this situation has prompted a thorough review of the legislation. It is essential to clarify and simplify the regulations, to ensure regulations going forward reflect the new era of environmental awareness and that all stakeholders are involved in both the drafting and implementation of such control measures.

The complete press release can be found: http://www.kfo.ie/profet.html

Extensive information on PROFET Policy, its history and other partners is available on the web-site profetpolicy.info. For more information on this workshop, please visit:

Aquaculture Europe 2007, 24 - 27 October 2007, Istanbul (Turkey)

The European Aquaculture Society and Eurasia Trade Fairs have combined their aquaculture events to launch the first “new format" Aquaculture Europe event, which combines a scientific conference with the highly successful Future Fish Eurasia Exhibition.

The interface between these two main features – the industry forum - will be filled by special events, including an industry day or ‘farmers day’, workshops for industry and the AE2007 student forum. As always, various social events will be a part of the Aquaculture Europe meeting.

The conference theme "Competing claims" addresses the various levels of competition that aquaculture faces at present, but upon which its future development will depend. "Claims" exist from other stakeholders with respect to physical space, investment and other finances, resources (e.g. for feed raw materials and water resources), technology and others.
