Experimental Course for Underwater Restorer, 1 – 7 October 2007, Ischia (Italy)

The restoration of archaeological finds starts in-field, whether in a dry environment or in a wet or submerged one, through an intense interdisciplinary relationship between the archaeologist and the restorer. The idea of training an underwater restorer who is able to understand the problems that archaeologists have to face during the recovery of submerged finds, and also able to cooperate with them while offering his know-how, makes this course unique and important.

The application form must be received before the 22nd of September 2007.

To apply for the course, please visit: http://www.istitutoeuropeodelrestauro.it/eng/iscrizioni.php

PESCALEX 2nd Progress Meeting - Crete

The 2nd progress meeting for the PESCALEX project took place on Crete, discussing amongst others the Interim Report, status of the website, the Language modules and the final workshop.

Although the Interim Report was submitted to LEARGAS, Dublin in January, it was not evaluated until June 2007 which has caused real difficulties in budgetary terms, as partners are not sure whether certain activities are acceptable. Other changes were the departure of Dr O'Connell from Bergen Hogheskule and loosing the services of Ms McVeigh.

The structural re-design of the website took longer than anticipated to carry out. Its interface looks much the same as the previous one, but its functionality is very different.

The English section of the Language Modules was online by the end of November 2006, followed by Basic Techniques for Fish Haematology from November to February 2007, then by the Fish Diseases glossary in all project languages except Greek. The French and Spanish Level 1 modules were online in April and in May 2007. The Fish disease module, now renamed Aquatic Pathology module is still being adapted for CLIL presentation. This is an extremely time-consuming task as partners had decided that the text should follow the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation structural format as in FISHBASE. The partners decided that it was absolutely essential to include an audio element in the Beginners' language module, as the CLIL methodology demanded this.

Final details for the final workshop were worked out, including the draft agenda. All further details will be given on the PESCALEX website, along with the Final Programme: www.pescalex.org

Aquaculture Europe 2007, 24 - 27 October 2007, Istanbul (Turkey)

The European Aquaculture Society and Eurasia Trade Fairs have combined their aquaculture events to launch the first “new format" Aquaculture Europe event, which combines a scientific conference with the highly successful Future Fish Eurasia Exhibition.

The interface between these two main features – the industry forum - will be filled by special events, including an industry day or ‘farmers day’, workshops for industry and the AE2007 student forum. As always, various social events will be a part of the Aquaculture Europe meeting.

The conference theme Competing claims addresses the various levels of competition that aquaculture faces at present, but upon which its future development will depend. "Claims" exist from other stakeholders with respect to physical space, investment and other finances, resources (e.g. for feed raw materials and water resources), technology and others.
