Postgraduate
Programmes and new range of short training programmes for continuing
professional development, University of Stirling (UK), start September
2007
Besides
its continuing Postgraduate Programmes, the University of Stirling’s
world-class centre for research and development in aquaculture has now
launched a new range of training programmes targeted at people working
in the rural aquaculture industry. The Institute of Aquaculture has
updated the training it offers to provide a wide selection of credited
short courses, allowing people to boost their skills without a large
time commitment.
Two week long courses are available in vocational subjects such as:
Sustainable Aquaculture, Aquaculture Nutrition, Aquaculture and the
Environment, Aquaculture Systems, Aquaculture Development, Aquaculture
Business Management, Aquatic Veterinary Studies and Aquatic
Pathobiology. The flexible training courses are designed to fit around
the lifestyles of those working in aquaculture, particularly rural
workers, who want to learn but can’t afford to take time out for longer
periods of study.
The novel two-week teaching approach means that credit can be gained
towards a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or Master’s
Degree. All of the modules are available for Continuing Professional
Development, so professional training needs can be met with the option
of returning at a later stage to complete an academic programme and
gain a University qualification. For those who need even greater
flexibility, distance learning courses such as our Postgraduate
Certificate in Aquatic Animal Health and Master’s in Aquatic Resources
Development are offered too.
The Institute of Aquaculture has successfully met industry and academic
needs for the last 35 years with its provision of high quality and
relevant aquaculture teaching and training. Teaching is carried
out in state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories by highly
experienced academic staff.

Short training course: Shore Protection Strategies, Marina di Massa (Italy), 17 - 20 September 2007
ENCORA - European
Network for Coastal Research Co-ordination Action - is a European
part-funded initiative that essentially acts as a "network of
networks", linking national coastal networks across Europe. ENCORA
provides a range of services to coastal practitioners and researchers,
including: a mechanism to search for contacts or information across
European coastal networks; opportunities for young professionals to
travel to conferences and take part in exchange visits and a Coastal
Wiki - which provides free access to coastal and marine literature.
As part of ENCORA project activities, the Italian Coastal Network (RIC)
are co-organising a short course on Shore Protection Strategies. The
course is aimed at young researchers and technicians and will
illustrate several shore protection methods, with special regard
towards soft and innovative techniques. The training course will be
delivered in English, and will take place in Marina di Massa (Italy)
from September 17th-20th 2007. The course programme will comprise
theoretical classes and field trips along the coast. September 21st
2007, there will be a national scientific meeting on the subject of
innovative techniques for shore defence - an additional event to which
participants of this course are welcome to attend.

Collaboration
Workshop: Carrying Capacity Tools, Results and User Perspectives, 11 July 2007, Dublin (Ireland)
A workshop entitled
Carrying Capacity Tools, Results and User Perspectives will be held in
the offices of the Geological Survey of Ireland, Haddington Road,
Dublin 4 on July 11. This
one day Workshop is a follow on from the successful one day Conference
held in Westport, Co. Mayo last September. The workshop assumes
participants have no prior knowledge about carrying capacity, which may
be defined as the ability to maintain animal and plant life within a
discrete area in such a way that the ecosystem remains in equilibrium.
Applied to aquaculture, it is about the ability of a particular area to
support shellfish and/or finfish production in a sustainable way.
Participation is open to anyone who is interested in the coastal zone
and wants to find out more about carrying capacity studies, single bay
management or an ecosystem approach to bay management. Target audiences
include users of the marine, such as fishermen, aquaculturists, and
those involved in environmental & water monitoring, and coastal
zone modelling & planning.
The conference is particularly relevant, in light of the State now
planning and implementing carrying capacity studies for most of the
major bays in the country. Similar studies are currently underway in
bays in Ireland North and South and several are completed or nearing
completion.
The agenda contains three major sessions:
1. Tools for Carrying Capacity Studies
2. Results from Carrying Capacity Studies
3. Aquaculture Users Perspective
Date: Wednesday, July 11th 2007, 9.30am – 3.30pm
Venue: Geological Survey of Ireland, Haddington Road, Dublin 4, Ireland
Organised by Aqua TT on behalf of Clew Bay Marine Forum, South East
Shellfish Co-op & La Tene Maps. Sponsored by Bord Iascaigh
Mhara (BIM) and the Marine Institute and members of the EU funded
Keyzones Project.
Registration:
• Call Aqua TT to reserve your space: +353 1 644 9008 or email aquatt@aquatt.ie

CRAB: press release Training Workshop, May 25th, Faro (Portugal)
The second CRAB training workshop took place on 25th May in Portugal
and was held in the Olhão´s City Hall (Câmara Municipal de Olhão), just
outside Faro. Key participants included 16 representatives from a
number of Portuguese shellfish associations, Ana Manjua (Viveiros &
Quintaformosa) and Bruno Fragoso (Ostracultura Lda), Sue Paffrath
(AquaTT), Rob Thomas (UCC) and Glen Thomas (TNO).
The event opened with a welcome address by the president of the APAA,
Francisco Manjua, and was followed by a short presentation by Sue
Paffrath highlighting the six major biofouling organisms identified in
the study, the problems associated with biofouling in Europe, the
overall aims, objectives and approach of the CRAB project, and some of
the strategies employed by SMEs to manage biofouling.
The most recent versions of the best practice guidelines and the
biofouling manual were presented to demonstrate two of the key final
deliverables from the CRAB project and their potential value to SMEs.
Most of the shellfish producers expressed a particular interest in
testing biological controls and silicon netting on oyster bags to try
and combat biofouling at their sites.
A French oyster production company (Ostracultura Lda, Sagremarisco),
producing ca 300 tons of oysters per annum for sale in French markets,
was visited as well. The main biofouling species experienced at this
site include mussels, tubeworms and algae. The main control strategies
employed to combat biofouling at this site are a number of cleaning
practices including heat treatment, jet washing and mechanical removal.
Cleaning is carried out in conjunction with routine grading of oysters.

Policy Day: Marine Protected Areas; 5 years since Johannesburg - Integrating social needs into policy
4 July 2007, Amsterdam (the Netherlands)
The
World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in 2002
put marine restoration and protection on the international agenda.
Participants in this event agreed to establish a network of Marine
Protected Areas (MPA), covering fifteen percent of the world’s oceans,
by 2015. Now that we are five years down the road, the first evaluation
of the progress made is called for.
This policy day focuses on the social dimensions of MPA governance in a
global perspective. It aims to gather an international audience of
policymakers, academics, and civil society groups, for a cutting edge
debate on topics relevant to North and South.
Policy day statements highlighting key issues will be formatted into a policy brief, to be distributed to all participants.
The policy day precedes and feeds into the MARE People and the Sea Conference IV (5-7 July, 2007), entitled Who owns the coast?

European Commission launches consultation on a sustainable future for European aquaculture
The European Commission has started a consultation exercise on
opportunities for the development of aquaculture in the European Union.
The steady growth in the demand for fisheries products represents great
potential for further development in the production of such products
from aquaculture. The purpose of this consultation is, therefore, to
establish what action is desirable at EU level so that both the sector
and the consumers can reap the maximum benefit from this development,
while ensuring the sustainability of aquaculture activities. A detailed
consultation paper has been published on the Internet, and stakeholders
and citizens have until 15 July 2007 to provide the Commission with
their views.
