AquaTT Notice board: Staff Departure

Dear Friends & Colleagues,

Working with the secretariat here at AquaTT for the past five years has been rewarding, challenging and productive, so it is with difficulty, much thought & consideration that I announce my departure.  I have now accepted a position with a local accountancy practice as an opportunity to further my career goals in the pursuit of a professional accountancy qualification.

I have enjoyed meeting and working with you and thank you for your support. I wish you and AquaTT continued success in all your endeavors.

With all best wishes,
Erin McVeigh

Education

Short course: Applied Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Coastal and Marine Management, 10 – 11 April 2007, University College Cork (Ireland)

This course is designed for technical staff and industry professionals involved in environmental management, Water Framework Directive GIS data management, engineering, planning, research, environmental consultancy, hydrography and those from local authorities whose remit includes aquatic management.

Participants will gain exposure to specific applications, by attending seminars from experts in the field of GIS and related areas such as remote sensing, modelling, seabed mapping, visualisation and Internet technologies. They will gain practical experience of GIS in the new dedicated GIS computer laboratory within the Geography Department of University College Cork.

The course will be a mix of seminars and GIS practicals. The GIS practical element will focus on applications within the framework of coastal and marine environments. GIS will be taught using the ESRI suite of ArcGIS software. Although some participants may use other software in their day-to-day jobs, the principles taught will be readily transferable to other software environments.

Fish Immunology Workshop. Wageningen University (the Netherlands), 15 - 19 April 2007

The annual Fish Immunology workshop comprises presentations (30 minutes to one-hour) by experienced lecturers, taking time to thoroughly introduce each subject, and two practical afternoons.

Objective:
To provide participants with advanced knowledge, both theoretical and practical, on the fish immune system. Emphasis will be placed on innate and acquired immunity, on immune modulation and on immunity to infection. During the workshop the latest insights in the evolution of the immune system but also related issues such as (experimental) animal welfare and the influence of stress on the immune response will be discussed.

Level:
The workshop is targeting academic and company researchers as well as management staff in the aquaculture industry. We more than welcome PhD students and therefore have lowered (!) the registration fee for PhD students. The official language of the workshop is English.

The number of participants is limited to 30 persons, admitted on a ‘first-come’ basis. Registration fee is 250 € (Ph.D.), 450 € (academic staff) or 550 € (company staff). For all-in registration (including accommodation and all meals) add 450 € for the whole workshop period.

You can find more information on registration and accommodation on our website: http://www.cbi.wur./fish_workshop/

Advanced course: ‘Quality and safety control of fish and fish products’. Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (Spain), 11- 15 June 2007

Objective of this course:
Through a general review of the state of the art on fish safety and quality, the course aims to (i) improve the knowledge about safety and quality standards of fish and fish products; (ii) contribute to assure that controls are efficient, adequate and harmonized in different countries; and (iii) illustrate how risk analysis is already influencing fish safety in developed countries, and how this has in turn affected international fish trade.

Organization:
The course is organized by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), through the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ), with the collaboration of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through the Fisheries Department, and will take place at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza.

Admission:
The course is designed for a maximum of 25 participants with a university degree and is aimed at a broad sector of professionals within the fish industry and public administrations. Members of the competent authorities (fish inspection) and safety and quality managers in the fish industry will surely profit from most of the programme. In addition, professionals from R&D institutions and universities as well as professionals dealing with risk management of fish and fish products will find this course useful.

Registration:
Application forms may be obtained from:

Collaboration

Profet Policy Workshop: Cold Water Marine Aquaculture, 15 - 16 March 2007, Bergen (Norway)

Profet Policy – a new action to support aquaculture and fisheries in Europe

European policies inevitably affect the operations and development of aquaculture and fisheries. While the Common Fisheries Policy provides the core direction for both sectors, there are many Directives and Regulations that result from other European policies and Action Plans, which also affect aquaculture and fisheries.

Profet Policy will organize 9 workshops to present the policy issues that concern the aquaculture and the fisheries sector and to identify their needs for European RTD. It is anticipated that the workshops will provide opportunities for stakeholders to become better informed on European policies that affect their sector and, in addition, provide a platform for informed debate to identify the future research needs and other critical issues affecting the aquaculture and fisheries sector.

In addition, the possibilities of the 7th Framework Programme and the current consultation on the Green Paper for a Future Maritime Policy for Europe are additional elements that will be presented and discussed.

The workshops will be organised throughout Europe over the next 2 years, made on a regional and thematic basis. While some will treat aquaculture and fisheries separately, there will be at least 2 combined workshops.
The project also includes the preparation and communication of summaries on EU-funded research projects, made under recent Framework programmes, for aquaculture and fisheries.

This first workshop, Cold Water Marine Aquaculture, is coordinated by the FEAP with FHL Havbruk, the Norwegian fish farmers association. Topics include:
•    Identification of critical and technical policy issues
•    A review of the contribution of EU-funded RTD projects
•    Opportunities for aquaculture research within the 7th Framework Programme
•    Controlling diseases and maintaining healthy fish
•    Providing sustainably-produced feeds
•    Welfare and ethics in aquaculture
•    Skill development and lifelong learning
Several individual projects will be presented – such as the integrated projects ‘Seafood Plus’ [the benefits of seafood] and ‘Aquamax’ [Sustainable Aquafeeds to Maximise the Health Benefits of Farmed Fish for Consumers], either as presentations or on presentation stands.

Aquaculture Europe 2007
24 – 27 October 2007, Istanbul (Turkey)

The European Aquaculture Society and Eurasia Trade Fairs have combined their aquaculture events to launch the first “new formatâ€? Aquaculture Europe event, which combines a scientific conference with the highly successful Future Fish Eurasia Exhibition.

The interface between these two main features – the industry forum - will be filled by special events, including an industry day or ‘farmers day’, workshops for industry and the AE2007 student forum. As always, various social events will be a part of the Aquaculture Europe meeting.

The conference theme Competing claims addresses the various levels of competition that aquaculture faces at present, but upon which its future development will depend. "Claims" exist from other stakeholders with respect to physical space, investment and other finances, resources (e.g. for feed raw materials and water resources), technology and others.

Press Release: NAFC takes lead in marine mapping

For the first time, over 100 maps have been collated to show the extent of human activities and natural resources around Shetland by a pilot project hosted by the Marine Management Department at NAFC Marine Centre. The Shetland based Scottish Sustainable Marine Environment Initiative (SSMEI) pilot is one of four projects in Scotland, aimed at developing a local marine action plan.

The SSMEI project is intended to assist decision makers by providing an environmental overview of the area and investigating how different activities interact with each other. The project looks at everything which affects the coastal and marine area. The maps demonstrate a snapshot of what is where and when it occurs. This should provide the information necessary to assist decision-makers in being better informed on how the sea is used, from safeguarding natural assets to recognising development potential.

The annual report has been published on the NAFC website www.nafc.ac.uk. The project is now entering its next phase – the production of a spatial plan with a wide consultation with marine users over the next two years. The final document will have policies detailing where a particular development is likely to be acceptable and where it is not.
