AQUALABS
- "Design and Operation of Recirculation Technologies" Response -
Wageningen, the Netherlands 27th February - 3rd March 2006
The sixth of the
Marie Curie funded AQUALABS Training Course Series took place in
Wageningen, the
Netherlands from the 27th February - 3rd March 2006.
The course had 30 participants from 18 countries worldwide. The focus
of this five-day training course was Design and Operation of
Recirculation Technologies and was hosted at the Department of Animal
Sciences of Wageningen University, Wageningen, the Netherlands. This
outstanding university has a well established reputation as a centre of
excellence in aquaculture systems research with focus on recirculation
systems.
The
course reviewed principles, concepts and operation of commercial
aquaculture recirculating systems. The objective was to examine and
convey aspects of recirculation technology of importance to the design
and evaluation of new and existing fish farm installations. Emphasis
was placed on the provision of opportunities for gaining hands-on
experience in the design, evaluation and operation of recirculation
systems. Aspects of farm management and routine-based operations at
fish farms using recirculation systems were also addressed.
For
the purpose of the course the Aquaculture & Fisheries Group sourced
a number of experts in this field of research for the lectures from the
IFREMER, Hesy Bergambacht B.V., Clemson University (USA), Wageningen
University, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, University of
California, North Carolina State University and Fleuren & Nooijen
Viskwekerijen BV. The course coordinators also arranged three excellent
technical visits to Zeeland-Vis B.V. (Turbot Farm), Burgers' Zoo
(Oceanium) and Mondi-aal (Eel Farm).
I
would like to take this opportunity on behalf of AquaTT to thank the
scientific coordinators at Wageningen University for all their work:
Dr. Marc Verdegem & Ing. E. Eding.

AQUALABS - "Aquatic Animal Disease Diagnostics" Response - Stirling, Scotland 15th - 20th January 2006
The fifth of the Marie Curie
funded AQUALABS Training Course Series took place in Stirling, Scotland
from the 15th 20th January. The course had 31 participants from 21
countries worldwide, New Zealand, Norway, America, Finland, India,
France, Greece and Turkey to name but a few. The six day training
course provided an opportunity for students and researchers to share,
explore and identify new laboratory techniques and research
developments. The focus of the course was Aquatic Animal Disease
Diagnostics. This informative training course took place at the
Aquaculture Technology Centre, Institute of Aquaculture at the
University of Stirling, Scotland.
Through
the media of formal lectures, practical demonstrations, and case
studies the course gave participants an understanding of the role and
context of diagnosis of aquatic animal diseases. The integration of
available investigative techniques with diagnostic pathology and
epidemiology to understand and control diseases were introduced, using
specific diseases from finfish, molluscs and crustaceans as examples.
Diagnostic and research techniques were discussed and demonstrated
using the following case-studies Mycobacteria, Nodavirus, ISAV,
Parasites and Shellfish.
I
would like to take this opportunity on behalf of AquaTT to thank the
scientific coordinators at the Aquaculture Technology Centre, Institute
of Aquaculture at the University of Stirling, Scotland for all their
work: Dr. John Bostock, Ms. Sue Paffrath & Ms. Georgia Monti.
Lorraine Rafferty, Project Officer
AquaTT would like to thank all the students and researchers who applied for the AQUALABS Training Course Series 2005/06.
AquaTT received over 450 applications from students and researchers
worldwide! For further information on the upcoming AQUALABS Student

FAO Glossary of Aquaculture - April 2006
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
Fisheries Department has published a multilingual Glossary of
Aquaculture containing, at the time of publication, 2,958 terms with
definitions, synonyms, related terms, information sources and images,
when available. The primary objectives of the glossary are to: (i)
serve as a reference to fish farmers, consultants, administrators,
policy makers, developers, engineers, agriculturists, economists,
environmentalists and all those interested in aquaculture, and (ii)
facilitate communication among experts and scientists involved in
aquaculture research and development. The online glossary of
aquaculture is available in the five official languages of FAO (Arabic,
Chinese, English, French and Spanish) at the following address: http://www.fao.o/glossary/aquaculture/

Nordic Web Based Database for studies in Aquaculture and Freshwater Fisheries - April 2006
The NOVA
university network, a collaboration of Nordic agricultural, forestry
and veterinary universities, has opened a new database for university
level courses in aquaculture and freshwater fisheries. The objective of
the database is to promote mobility of students and collaboration among
participating institutions in teaching courses (BSc, MSc and PhD) in

The PESCALEX project, a two-year project (IRL/05/B/F/PP-153180) funded by the EU LEONARDO DA VINCI Programme, runs from 1st October 2005 until 30th September 2007.
PESCALEX aims to create content and language integrated learning (CLIL) courses in fish health/disease for the benefit of specific areas of Europe where the aquaculture industry is vital to the economy. Its CLIL language learning methodology will enable users to both teach and learn vocationally-oriented material through the medium of a foreign language.
A virtual learning environment will be constructed with:
* 4 multi-lingual modules in 6 languages (EL, EN, ES, FR, NO, PL). These will form part of a blended learning framework (tutor-led with online ODL materials).
* 4 course modules: Quality Assurance for Fish Health Management, Basic techniques in Fish Haematology, Cost-effective Feeding for Fish, Fish Diseases. The last module is completely new and work has already begun on developing this course in the required basic language structures. The first three exist in English, Norwegian and Greek and will have to be translated into French, Spanish and Polish. On its completion, the Fish Diseases module will also be translated into the above languages.
* A collection of specific scientific terminology concerning fish health/diseases in English, French, Greek, Spanish, Norwegian and Polish.
* Existing basic level language learning modules, which will be used to support the delivery of the CLIL materials (English, French, Spanish, Norwegian, Polish, Greek, Portuguese and Swedish)
There will be a Final Workshop where the deliverables will be demonstrated to a wide audience of interested users, probably in France in June/July 2007.
