"Molecular Biology and Ecology in Aquaculture" Short Professional Training Course at University of Kuopio, Finland May 23rd - 30th, 2005

The call for participation in a new and exciting laboratory-based training course “Molecular Biology and Ecology in Aquaculture was launched today at http://www.aquatt.ie/aquattinitiatives/currentinitiatives/aqualabs.php. The course, the first in the AquaTT-led, Marie Curie funded series known as AQUALABS, will be hosted at the centre of excellence in molecular techniques namely, the University of Kuopio, Finland. Targeted at PhD level students and early-stage researchers, a significant number of funded places are available on the course and thus, all interested parties are invited to apply early in order to be able to benefit from this generous offer.

With a consistent increase in the importance of molecular studies in aquaculture and fish ecology, this course seeks to provide state-of-the-art hands-on training in molecular immunology, RNA extraction, electrophoresis, cDNA synthesis, quantitative RT-PCR, gel preparation & extraction, TOPO cloning, plating, plasmid-DNA purification for sequencing, analyses and microarray technology to name but a few. The full listing of topics and practicals is available on the workshop programme at the above mentioned web-link.
A comprehensive educational package consisting of theory, lectures, practicals, case-studies, field-trip and specifically sourced guest expert lecturers is planned and will take place between May 23rd and May 30, 2005 inclusive. Part and parcel of the educational experience within Marie Curie is the opportunity for exchange with other young researchers and thus, a fun-filled leisure and cultural programme will complement and complete the educational experience. All interested parties are invited to visit the web-link today where the workshop programme and application process, including guidance notes and application form is readily available. The closure date for applications is indicated absolutely as April 22th, 2004.

AquaTT Launch New Learning Materials - March 2005

Three new learning modules have been developed under the auspices of the DG-FISHERIES funded, AquaTT-led “Aquaculture Student Workshop 2004 initiative. The learning material has been developed to help current European educators have access to new materials which they can use in their own teaching. The material has been designed for use as learning units, which can be used independently or jointly as a reference or teaching resource when covering the subject area.

The “Fish Health module, devised by Vet-Aqua International, provides a detailed analysis of the current sampling techniques for disease diagnosis, outlines the steps for Gram staining and inoculation of agar plates, presents five detailed health case-studies covering hatchery Bass & Bream, a Carp farm, an Atlantic Salmon freshwater cage, a Rainbow Trout freshwater tank site and Atlantic Salmon sites in Norway. The information is complemented by a series of related presentations by the author. To access the module click on http://www.aquatt.ie/resources/fishhealth.php

The “Traceability module devised by Irish Food Quality Certification (IFQC) Ltd., focuses on how traceability has been used effectively in the food chain, reviews the EU legislation and identifies the different systems that can be used for effective traceability. To access the module click on http://www.aquatt.ie/resources/traceability.php

The “Marketing in Aquaculture module devised by TNC Partners, deals specifically with defining the marketing system, definition and use of the marketing instruments, data collection and assessment, target markets, distribution channels, competition, legislation and strategic marketing. To access the module click on http://www.aquatt.ie/resources/marketing.php

Glasgow Traceability Seminars in conjunction with Fishing 2005 - SECC, Glasgow, Scotland 19th May 2005

The Glasgow Traceability Seminars are being held again for the second year running in conjunction with Fishing 2005. The seminars will be held on the first day of the exhibition and like last year, there will be no cost to attend. The focus of the Glasgow Traceability Seminar for 2005 will be "Implementing Traceability", as a result of the coming into force of EU Regulation 178/2002 at the beginning of the year. The Seminar will have consecutive sessions with discussion time at the end of each session and a round up forum at the end of the day. The seminars are designed so that visitors can dip in and out as required.

Session one - EU Traceability Projects
Session two - Implementing Traceability - Examples of Best Practice
Session three - Company Presentations from Suppliers of Traceability Solutions

AquaTT will coordinate the event with assistance from La Tene Maps and Nautilus Consultants. John Coleman the seminar organiser speaking on the forthcoming seminar said "Plans for this seminar are well advanced. We are expecting speakers from Britain, Ireland, Spain and perhaps France and Germany. As the seminar is focusing on Implementing Traceability, I want real people speaking, for example we are hoping to have a skipper speak about his onboard weighing systems and the benefits to him financially or a fish market manager. I also have about 10 companies who have already expressed an interest in making a presentation on their traceability goods or services. So over the next week or two we will be putting the final programme together. There will be something for everyone in these seminars. We intend to publish the proceedings together with the proceedings of last year’s event during the summer".

Anyone who is thinking about going to the seminar should send an e-mail to John Coleman of La Tene Maps Ltd <johncoleman@latene.com> or Clare Northcott of Heighway Events Clare.Northcott@informa.com. This is necessary to get an idea of numbers of people so as to provide a suitable meeting room. If you or your company is interested in giving a presentation on its traceability products at Glasgow please contact John Coleman at johncoleman@latene.com. Presentation time is reserved on a first come/ first served basis.

Fishing for a job! by Jasper Van Houcke of Gent University Jasper

Last November I graduated at the University of Ghent. Today I am officially a Master of Science in Aquaculture and unemployed. As applying for all kinds of jobs within the aquaculture industry and all over the world, it strikes me that there are limited possibilities for starters just like myself. Consulting the “employment, jobs and opportunities sections on various websites at least 90 percent of the numerous vacancies require experience. As may become clear to all, starters have limited experience.

So where to go from here? Well it becomes clear to me that either you have to wait for a long time to find a starters job or get some hands-on experience doing internships of some sort. Most of these internships I found on the Internet cover both housing and living costs. However relocation or travel expenses are usually not funded. Since studying is not that cheap, I guess that a lot of people after their graduation don’t have a lot of money left. So it might be that they don’t have the required money for these travel expenses.

The message of the article: Shouldn’t there be a fund for the travelling costs required to do some internship? It would surely help students gain more experience and see other aspects of the aquaculture industry than just the one, which is present in their home countries. As the European countries unite more and more to one Europe, shouldn’t it be possible that the European Union will contribute to this.

I can see that this will cost a lot of money but in my personal opinion there is a need for something like this. Another solution to get the industry involved in this would be that travel expenses are only refunded if the young professional does an internship in companies that contribute to the travel expenses fund. In this way costs could be shared.

I don’t think this is an unachievable goal, considering we are this far with the European studies and funding to study abroad for some time. However I don’t think this should stop with students but young professionals should get this same opportunity.
I really hope that someone at least has a look into this topic, considering this is my opinion and thus maybe not entirely true for everyone. As for now back to the “employment sections!……….

If you would like to write an article for the student corner please contact Caoimhe at aquatt@aquatt.ie
