AQUALABS "Freshwater Aquaculture and the Environment" - Szarvas, Hungary 22th - 27th August 2005

The call for participation in a new and exciting laboratory-based training course “Freshwater Aquaculture and the Environment was launched today at www.aquatt.ie The course, the second in the AquaTT-led, Marie Curie funded series known as AQUALABS, will be hosted at the exceptional Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation (HAKI), Szarvas, Hungary which is managed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development. Targeted at PhD level students and early-stage researchers, a significant number of funded places are available on the course and thus, all interested parties are invited to apply early in order to be able to benefit from this generous offer.

With a consistent increase and growing interest in the importance of freshwater aquaculture and the environment, this course seeks to provide state-of-the-art hands-on training on GC/MS pesticide analysis, AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrometry) for heavy metal analysis, fish culture technologies, fish pond water recirculation systems and GC/MS off-flavour analysis to name but a few.

A comprehensive educational package consisting of theory, lectures, practicals, case-studies, field exercises/demos and specifically sourced guest expert lecturers is planned and will take place between August 22 and August 27, 2005 inclusive. The lecturers will give lectures covering the most current research areas. Part and parcel of the educational experience within Marie Curie is the opportunity for young researchers to exchange and discuss ideas and meet leading experts in the field of research. A social agenda will also be prepared for the participants on the Training Course.

'DesignACT'- Designing the Aquaculture Centre of Technology - facing the unmet needs in European Aquaculture - Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

Since April 2005, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have been coordinating a European 6th Framework project 'DesignACT'. The project will design a European Aquaculture Centre of Technology in Mid-Norway with the aim to establish a new large-scale experimental facility for technology research and training that will address the future needs in the European aquaculture sector. Special focus will go to offshore fish farming and developing more competitive and cost-efficient production technologies for sustainable production of new and existing aquaculture species. The centre will provide installations, equipment, instruments and cultivation methods on a full-scale, giving researchers the opportunity to validate models or theories developed at their home institute.

Singleimage Seminar - Web Tools for EU Research Contracts - Cambridge, UK 7th September 2005

EU research projects share lots of information and involve joint working amongst organisations from many different countries. There are many software tools which can support them, from shared workspaces to resource planning and reporting tools, from electronic meetings to web content management. At this seminar, several project coordinators and participants in FP6 projects will explain how they use these tools for a range of functions and what gave their consortia the greatest benefits. They will share their experiences of simple tools for sharing files and discussion fora, to more complex ones for research community building, for reporting project progress to the EU, and web-based video conferencing.

Student Corner

The PhD vision at the University of Wales, Swansea - Fiona Eddy

Hello,

I am currently based at the University of Wales, Swansea where I have begun my first year of research as a PhD student. I will be working on the ontogeny of the immune defence mechanisms in the European green shore crab Carcinus maenas. Currently I am looking at novel disease in adult crabs but hope to start investigation into larval development later this year. A molecular approach will be taken to investigate the immune development in larvae. This will involve laboratory rearing of Carcinus larvae as well as on a semi commercial level. The overall aim of this study is to improve disease resistance of crustaceans under aquaculture conditions.

I previously studied Aquatic Bioscience at the University of Glasgow, where I continued to complete a Masters of Research, in Marine and Fresh Water Biology and Ecology and Environmental Management. During this time I studied modules in Marine and Tropical Marine Ecosystems, as well as carrying out a research project on the physiological response of Nephrops norvegicus under stress conditions during commercial transport. This was my first introduction to crustacean physiology/immunology. During my undergraduate honours year I studied Fisheries and Aquaculture, this gave me a comprehensive and broad knowledge of the aquaculture industry, as well as giving me the opportunity to visit fish farms and scientific based aquaculture units. After my time in Glasgow I immediately took up my current position in Swansea.

I recently attended an Aqua labs training course in Koupio, Finland, in Molecular Techniques, this has given me a basic introduction into Molecular biology and will prove invaluable to my continued research.

So far so good!

Fiona Eddy
