MarineTT – How to get more Innovation from Research

The MarineTT consortium hosted a workshop, “How do we get more Innovation from Research? Bringing together and learning from pioneering initiatives and novel approaches”, in Brussels on the 19th July 2012. Representatives from over 16 different initiatives debated the critical barriers for getting innovation from research. The workshop's outcomes will contribute to the development of a practical set of recommendations that can potentially be used to overcome these barriers by making adjustments to the research governance system.

MarineTT is a timely FP7 Support Action that pilots new methodologies and tools for capturing, analysing and transferring knowledge from past and in-progress EC projects. The overall aim is to develop improved systems that can measurably demonstrate value creation from research investments.

There are several initiatives at EC and Member State level running in parallel to MarineTT that also aim to develop methodologies, tools and processes for managing and transferring knowledge from RTD. Coordinators and representatives from these initiatives as well as policy-makers participated in the workshop. The workshop format was highly engaging and required contributions from all participants via a series of intense brainstorming sessions on different aspects of the research governance system.

Participants were presented with 12 critical barriers to innovation from research, which had been identified by survey before and validated during the first MarineTT workshop, “From Marine RTD to Measurable Value Creation” (Brussels - 23rd May). Participants were asked to propose possible actions and solutions to overcome each barrier, with each participant having the option to validate or refute actions based on their own experiences and findings.

David Murphy, manager of AquaTT and coordinator of MarineTT said: “During the course of MarineTT we have gained a number of insights into how knowledge is currently managed and how this is affecting innovation. We believe that a collective set of recommendations co-authored from a broad range of initiatives will provide the basis and evidence for change and be better able to influence the existing research governance system.”

Presentations from the workshop will be available shortly from the MarineTT website www.marinett.eu where you can also find the list of barriers identified in the first MarineTT workshop. For further details on the workshops or any aspect of the MarineTT project contact David Murphy (david@aquatt.ie, +353 1 644 9008).

AQUAEXCEL - 3rd Call for Transnational Access

On a regular basis, the AQUAEXCEL project invites proposals from European research groups for scientific research that utilises the facilities of any of the participating Aquaculture Research Infrastructures. The AQUAEXCEL project unites major aquaculture experimental facilities with capacity to undertake experimental trials on a selection of commercially important fish aquaculture species and system types.

These facilities are made available to the research community for Transnational Access (TNA) with the support of the European Union 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (Infrastructures). Interested researchers can propose projects that involve visits of one or two people to the chosen Research Infrastructure for periods of up to three months. The research work and associated travel and subsistence expenses will be paid under the project. The third Call for Access is officially open. Deadline is 14 September 2012. Lindsay Laird Award 2012

It’s hard to believe that it is more than 10 years since Lindsay Laird, aquaculture academic extraordinaire, passed away. Her legacy lives on, but not only in her various publications and translations.  Her work with students in Aberdeen University has been extended and sustained through the Lindsay Laird Student Award for Innovation in Aquaculture. Until now, there have been four winners, and AQUATT, the sponsors of the award, are now on the search for a fifth.

Europe is in the grip of financial turmoil with devastating effects on job prospects, particularly for young people, where unemployment is reaching unprecedented heights. The four winners, one from Germany, one from Spain, and two from Portugal, have all been able to continue with their chosen area of work, and indeed three are still working within the project, laboratory or institute which supported their award-winning poster. One has moved onwards and upwards, and is now a technical manager in the international animal nutritional company Biomin, where he has made a noticeable contribution to research in his paper entitled 'Prevalence of mycotoxins in aqua feedstuffs' presented at Aquaculture America 2012, Las Vegas, in March 2012.

So, students, make sure that your poster is up and ready for the 2012 Lindsay Laird Award, which will be judged in Prague by Bjorn Myrseth (Vitamar AS, Norway) and Gavin Burnell (University of Cork, Ireland).
