International Master in Fisheries economics and management, Barcelona (Spain)

The objective of the Master is to provide high level specialisation in issues related to the economics and management of the fishing activity through:

  • An analysis of the fishing system, exploitation mechanisms, marketing, evaluation and management, with special emphasis on the economic perspective and interpretation of fishing issues in the Mediterranean, an area which, due to its diversity of species and fleets and fragmented vessel ownership, requires management based on control of the fishing effort.
  • A multi-disciplinary vision of fisheries management from the perspective of different sciences such as biology, economics, law and sociology.
  • Acquisition of experience in the use of new techniques and methods for the development of a more efficient fisheries management, adapted to the conditioning social and environmental factors.
  • An initiation into research, making a critical application of the knowledge, skills and competence acquired in the treatment of real problems related with the economics and management of fishing activity.

The Master is developed over two academic years on a full-time basis [120 credits, following the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)], and is structured in two parts.

Join a research mission onboard the RV Celtic Voyager

Did you know that 80% of all life on earth is found under the ocean surface? Did you know that the oceans contain 99% of the living space on the planet and yet less than 10% of them have been explored by humans? Have you ever wondered how scientists explore the oceans or conduct scientific research from an ocean-going vessel?

In October 2008, the Irish Marine Institute's Integrated Marine Exploration Programme (IMEP), will give transition year students the opportunity to go onboard the national research vessel the RV Celtic Voyager. While onboard they will work alongside scientists from a wide variety of disciplines to conduct a scientific research survey.

For more information and application (before September 12th 2008), please check: http://www.science.ie/EN/index.cfm/section/news/page/newsPage/news_key/569
