Applied Training Workshop “From Theory to the Application of Genomics in Northern European Aquaculture: Basis and Prospects”, 26 – 27 March 2008, Institute of Aquaculture, Stirling (UK)

This workshop is organised by the Institute of Aquaculture in Stirling and Genesis Faraday as part of the Aquagenome EU project to disseminate knowledge and training in genomics in aquaculture. This workshop is focused on the application of genomic technologies to northern aquaculture species (salmon, trout, cod, etc).

Seaweed Identification Workshop, 7 – 11 April 2008, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (UK)

The Estuarine & Coastal Sciences Association offers a workshop on how to identify seaweeds, search the rocky shore effectively for the fullest species list, how to use and understand the professional seaweed identification literature and how seaweeds can be used in environmental assessment including WFD tools.

Field course: “Collecting & Identifying Seaweeds”, 9 – 11 May 2008, Wales

(Shell)Fish Immunology Workshop, 22 – 27 June 2008, Wageningen University, the Netherlands

The objective of the present workshop is to provide participants with advanced knowledge, both theoretical and practical, on the immune system of fish and shellfish. Emphasis will be placed on innate and acquired, cellular immunity, but also on immune modulation and future developments in fish immunology.

Successful International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) in the Netherlands

The International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) is an annual conference that originated in the United States and has been expanded to the European continent due to its immense success. The symposium is unique in Europe as no other scientific shellfish conferences are held in Europe to date. It is an opportunity to address shellfish topics and meet people involved in shellfish science. The 10th ICSR conference was held in November 2007 in The Netherlands in Vlissingen, Zeeland.

FEUFAR Workshop, 11 March 2008, Brussels (Belgium)  

The next FEUFAR (Future of European Fisheries and Aquaculture Research) workshop will focus on future scenarios of Fisheries and Aquaculture. The EU has commissioned the FEUFAR project with the aim of defining the research required in the next ten years, to permit exploitation and farming of aquatic resources set against the context of key challenges and risks for meeting sustainability requirements. The March workshop, both open to experts and stakeholders is the fourth workshop in a series in which the project team tries to get input from a wider audience on the findings so far.

Eastern Baltic Aquaculture Conference - “New methods for New Products and Markets”, 6 – 7 May 2008, Riga (Latvia)

Aquaculture UK 2008, 21 – 22 May 2008, Aviemore (Scotland) 

AquaTT will be amongst the exhibitors at the new international Aquaculture Exhibition and Conference Aquaculture UK 2008 being held at the Macdonald Highland Resort in Aviemore, near Inverness. The show supersedes an event previously held in association with a fishing show in Glasgow. The two day conference, run alongside the exhibition, will have sessions aimed at all levels in the aquaculture industry.

SEAFOODplus Conference, 9 – 11 June 2008, Copenhagen (Denmark) 

SEAFOODplus is an Integrated Research Project supported by the EU under FP6, which objective is to reduce health problems and to increase well-being among European consumers by applying the benefits obtained through consumption of health promoting and safe seafood products of high quality. The Fifth Open SEAFOODplus Conference will be the last in the present project period of SEAFOODplus and will present results obtained 2004 – 2008, presented by the SEAFOODplus scientists and industries.

AquAgriS Project Workshop, 11 – 12 June 2008, Universita del Salento, Lecce (Italy) 

The AquAgriS Project, which is funded by the European Commission under the FP6 “Food Quality and Safety” initiative, is researching where the European Union and selected countries are - with respect to the legislation and research activities in the management of waste materials produced by the farming, fisheries and aquaculture industries. Marine Renewable Energy and the Environment, 16 – 17 June, The Royal Institute of Great Britain, London (UK) 

This is a major international scientific conference on the environmental effects of offshore windfarms and other renewable energy technologies which will:
•    Distil the evidence base on environmental effects of marine renewable energy developments.  The prime focus will be offshore wind.

PROFET POLICY: EU FP5/FP6 North Sea Fisheries Research, Maintaining Dialogue, 23 – 24 June 2008, Copenhagen (Denmark) 

In the framework of the EU-funded project Profet Policy, ICES is organizing the workshop on North Sea fisheries. The overall focus of the project is on dissemination of FP5 and FP6 RTD results to stakeholders. At the “Maintaining Dialogue” workshop a variety of EU-funded project results will be presented by the leading scientists involved. There will be ample time for discussion.

Symposium: Coping with Global Change in Marine Social-Ecological Systems, 6 – 11 July 2008, FAO, Rome (Italy) 

The recent 4th Assessment Reports of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) identified a number of climate-related changes that are very likely to occur to marine systems in the near future. In addition, global changes are taking place in human systems which impact the oceans, including intensive fishing and globalisation of trade. The central goals of this symposium is to share experiences across disciplines and to identify key next steps and common elements and approaches that promote resilience of marine social-ecological systems in the face of global changes.

International Conference on Fish Diseases and Fish Immunology, 6 – 9 September 2008, Reykjavik, (Iceland) 

The aim of this conference is to gather scientists from all parts of the world to discuss the recent developments in the field. The understanding of infectious fish diseases and the causative agents, like viruses, bacteria and parasites, has been growing fast lately in the international scientific society. International Marine Environment Certificate

IMEC (International Marine Environment Certificate) is a project aimed at developing a certificate documenting personal environmental skills in marine and maritime issues. Increased and more diversified exploitation of marine resources must necessarily be followed by higher focus on sustainable practices and environmental awareness. In this respect, IMEC shall become a supplementary tool to legislation and environmental management systems.

Bright Sparks Programme 2008, September 2008, Marine Institute (Ireland)

The Irish Marine Institute is currently offering students who are interested in marine research, the opportunity to undertake a research survey in Irish waters on board the national Research Vessel, RV Celtic Voyager. The Bright Sparks Programme aims are to introduce students to the Marine Institute’s Research Vessel facilities and to provide experience in the following areas: Preparation and submission of research proposals. Design; planning and execution of scientific surveys; Analysis of survey data; Preparation of final survey report; Presentation of the results and findings.

Student Corner 

Delta Competition 2008, 1 April – 1 August 2008, Royal Haskoning

Royal Haskoning is organising a competition for students (Bsc, Msc and PhD) entitled the Delta Competition. The Delta Competition calls upon students from all over the world and from all relevant disciplines with inspiring, innovative ideas and creative solutions to adapt the deltas of the world to Climate Change. The aim of the competition is to identify ideas from different disciplines could contribute to a sustainable development of the deltas worldwide. These could cover (combinations of) areas such as: water; nature; mobility; agriculture; energy; health; housing; and/or recreation. Students will have to prepare a paper and submit this to an internationally acclaimed jury.
