New EC Project funded: VALLA – Validation of all Lifelong Learning in Aquaculture

The European Commission recently established the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning (EQF). The EQF will act as a translation device between Member States' qualifications systems in order to help employers and individuals compare and better understand citizens' qualifications and thus support mobility and lifelong learning.

AquaTT will be the coordinator of a new EC funded-project in the Lifelong Learning Programme dealing with certain aspects of the EQF challenges ahead. A key challenge for the EQF is the status of unaccredited short-term sectoral/professional training courses. Work placements, on-the-job training, and short courses (unaccredited learning) are often not part of national awards, even though such skill acquisition is seen as essential in competitive business. The new VALLA (Validation of all Lifelong Learning in Aquaculture) project will demonstrate how to validate and recognize short-term sectoral training (including non-formal learning), using the aquaculture sector as a pilot. VALLA will be led by coordinator AquaTT, in a partnership with FEAP, Ghent University, KEK, UMB, the Scottish Aquaculture Training Association and the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

Core objectives are to help build transparency and trust in the emergent EQF. VALLA will provide an occupational map for the sector using a competence-based approach. It will examine how the resulting competence-based learning can be evaluated and validated, and how short-term training can be awarded credits. VALLA will develop a methodology, dedicated software and supporting protocol, suitable for all sectors.

Symposium: Coping with Global Change in Marine Social-Ecological Systems, 6 – 11 July 2008, FAO, Rome (Italy)

The recent 4th Assessment Reports of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) identified a number of climate-related changes that are very likely to occur to marine systems in the near future. In addition, global changes are taking place in human systems which impact the oceans, including intensive fishing and globalisation of trade.

Marine ecosystem changes have impacts on, and consequences for, the human communities that depend on these systems, and how these human communities respond to these changes can have reciprocal impacts on marine ecosystems. Understanding the important issues and collaborating with other disciplines is essential for correctly interpreting the causes and dealing with the consequences of global changes in marine social-ecological systems. The central goals of the symposium are to share experiences across disciplines and to identify key next steps and common elements and approaches that promote resilience of marine social-ecological systems in the face of global changes.
