AQUALABS "Molecular Biology and Ecology in Aquaculture" Response - Kuopio, Finland 23rd - 30th May 2005

The application process is now closed for the first course in the AquaTT-led, short training course series, AQUALABS, partially funded by the Marie Curie programme. The reponse to this new and exciting laboratory-based training course “Molecular Biology and Ecology in Aquaculture has been tremendous. AquaTT received more than 90 applications from applicants worldwide, of which 30 will be selected.

This positive response demonstrates the demand for this type of training, providing state-of-the-art hands-on technical training in molecular immunology, RNA extraction, electrophoresis, cDNA synthesis, quantitative RT-PCR, gel preparation & extraction, TOPO cloning, plating, plasmid-DNA purification for sequencing, analyses and microarray technology.

The second AQUALABS Training Course, "Aquaculture and the Environment," is scheduled for August 22th - 27th, 2005 at the Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation (HAKI), Szarvas, Hungary focusing on the Aquaculture and the Environment. Please visit the AQUALABS link on the AquaTT website for future updates and regsitration announcements for this course: http://www.aquatt.ie/aquattinitiatives/currentinitiatives/aqualabs.php
Planet Aqua Initiative - Requests for Inspirational ideas and existing Educational Resources

Planet Aqua is a non-profit initiative, partially supported by the European Commission, to launch a travelling exhibition (February 2006) and supporting materials for primary school children in Ireland, emphasizing the importance of conserving and protecting our planet’s waters. Planet Aqua will complement the primary school curriculum, bring together those organisations with a vested interest in education and science, and contribute to the developing pool of educational resources and services.

Inspirational ideas and existing educational resources are now being sought:
- For the purposes of the exhibition, a number of interactive resources such as touch-screen games, pliable models and mock demonstrations
- For the purposes of a teacher’s manual, suggestions for classroom or local environment based activities
- For the purposes of the online portal, online adaptation of both of the above

Resources and activities are required for innovative approaches to illustrate concepts which fall under the following 8 major lesson headings:
- Water is everywhere
- Water is constantly moving
- Water is vital for all life
- Water is a habitat
- Food chains
- Biodiversity
- Water effecting humans (positive and negative impacts)
- Humans effective water (positive and negative impacts)

Those with a vested interest in aquatic resources, those with an interest to build on or make available existing educational resources, or ICT programmers working on project development are encouraged to contact Erin McVeigh, AquaTT Project Officer at erin@aquatt.ie for more information.

Planet Aqua is grateful for the support already being provided by the Discover Science and Engineering Programme, Marine Institute, Irish Sea Fisheries Board (BIM), National Centre for Technology in Education, Primary Curriculum Support Programme, and National Council for Curriculum Assessment.

Student Corner

The Aquaculture Voyage - by Sebastien Stoll

During my studies at James Cook University in Townsville (Australia) I have enrolled a large range of lectures in aquaculture and marine biology, I took part in field trips and work placements to commercial farms (prawn, barramundi, pearl oysters, crayfish…), I visited Australian research centers (AIMS, DPI), and I have attended many conferences on the latest local and international research/initiatives in aquaculture and marine biology.

James Cook University has a modern marine and aquaculture research facilities on the site that allowed students to join up special topics. For instance, with a group of students we set up and ran a farm from 2,000 post-larvae barramundi in water-recirculating system over a 9-month period. The innovative project was really successful, it also gave us an opportunity to develop a business plan. Such experience allowed us to pay close attention to the technical, managerial, commercial and financial aspects in a fake but challenging professional environment.

In my opinion, as illustrated in this case but also more generally speaking, special topics or traineeship are necessary to complement students' theoretical background and should promote best management practices in the industry. But it is not necessary to go to Australia to get such experience. Indeed, many universities in Europe already proposed excellent teaching and training for a least cost. In an aside I would like to comment shortly on Jasper Van Houcke for his previous message in the Training News (April 2005). I agree with your proposition and I think that the former (and regretted) AQUATT program on work placement was offering opportunity to go and do work placement in different countries in Europe while receiving a financial assistance for traveling. I will be interested to know if any similar European-funded programs were available at the present time (I have friends in the same situation as Jasper).

In December 2004 I completed my master of applied science in aquaculture at James Cook University and I started working as a consultant for Seamarc, a Maldivian company specialized in System Engineering and Marine Biology. I am currently working on the development of hatchery-based ornamental fish project. Maldives is a great place indeed, but the aquaculture of world marine ornamental fish is at the present time a tiny proportion, only 5% of all tropical ornamental marine fish species are bred artificially in the aquarium trade while the 95% remaining are directly captured in their natural habitat at adult stage. Also many problems have been reported on coral reefs and reef fish in the Maldives. The coastal villagers have been severely affected by the tsunami and the coral reef by 1998 El Nino. Thus there is interest and potential for this kind of project in the Maldives where my first motivation consist in working for a new aquaculture industry sector at a challenging position where I would love to see a flourishing project passing on technical skills to the local population. At the present time we have set up the hatchery. We will try to diversify the range of tropical reef fish species as much as possible starting by the Maldivian Anemonefish (or clownfish, Amphiprion nigripes). On a second hand we plan to use our facilities to train local people on ornamental fish production and open a school-farm in a near future. The school-farm would be the backbone of an active and innovative program for tropical reef fish resources development project in the Maldives. If you would like to receive further information or share some comments with us, you are more than welcome. Please contact me by e-mail at sebastien@seamarc.com.
