Education

AQUALABS "Freshwater Aquaculture and the Environment" Course - Szarvas, Hungary 22 - 27 August 2005 & "Fish Welfare" Course - Varese, Italy 11th - 17th September 2005

The application process is now closed for the second and third course in the AquaTT-led, short training course series, AQUALABS, partially funded by the Marie Curie programme. The overall response to the two training courses was very positive receiving applications from all over the world. It was only possible to facilitate 30 places on each course despite both courses being oversubscribed.

The Freshwater Aquaculture and the Environment course will take place at Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation (HAKI), Szarvas, Hungary (22th - 27th August 2005). HAKI is one of the main Government Research Institutes in Hungary and is equipped with unique complex of facilities such as modern research laboratories and indoor experimental fish rearing systems. The course will cover lectures and practicals on the key environmental issues of sustainable freshwater aquaculture, use and consumption of resources by freshwater aquaculture and water efficient and environment-friendly aquaculture systems.

The third course on "Fish Welfare" is scheduled for 11th - 17th September at the renowned University of Insubria, Varese, Italy. Study topics for this course will include (1) a description of welfare and its various aspects in fish; (2) lectures on the environmental factors which may result in the lack of growth in fish, activity mechanisms, monitoring protocols, Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) projects and control technologies etc; (3) a study of the current fish welfare monitoring techniques including behaviour, blood analysis, histological and histochemical tools, physiopathological approaches and zootechnical performances.

The next AQUALABS course will take place at the University College Cork, Ireland (12th - 17th December 2005) and will focus on "Quality of Fish Products". In 2006 two more AQUALABS courses will be organised at the University of Stirling, Scotland (15th - 20th January 2006) on Aquatic Animal Disease Diagnostics and Wageningen University, The Netherlands (February 27th - March 3rd 2006) on Design and Operation of Recirculation Technologies.

Oceans, Seafood & Human Health: The Changing Role of Seafood Technology - Norfolk, Virginia, USA 6th - 9th November 2005

Healthy oceans have a strong positive influence on the health and welfare of mankind – all over the world, governments and corporations are becoming increasingly aware of the ways that environmental conditions in our oceans affect the availability of the natural resources we all depend upon. The impact of this interdependency on fisheries, seafood technology, and human health is the theme of the 7th Joint Meeting of the Atlantic Fisheries Technology Conference and the Seafood Science and Technology Society of the Americas (AFTC-SST). This event will take place in Norfolk, Virginia, USA (6th - 9th November 2005).

The Changing Role of Seafood Technology symposium will cover the following topics - traceability of fishery products, novel uses for fishery by-products, new technologies including Polymerase Chain Reaction and High Hydrostatic Pressure Processing and current issues facing the seafood industry. The conference will also feature several poster sessions designed to give researchers and presenters ample time to review advances in industry and technology.

Student Corner

Aquaculture in Spain - Carmen Doñate

My name is Carmen and I am Spanish. I studied Biology and Marine Sciences in the University of Alicante (Spain). When I finished my degree studies I went to Crete (Greece), to the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, with the “Leonardo da Vinci European Program. I was there for six months working in a project about skin coloration of red porgy (Pagrus pagrus). I liked it a lot so I decided that I would like to work in that field, and now I am doing a PhD in aquaculture in Barcelona. I started in January; I could say that I am at the beginning. I am studying about the immunology of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Spain is one of the biggest aquaculture producers in Europe. The aquaculture in my country is an important industry that it has grown considerably in the last years and nowadays the number of fish farms is still increasing. The consumption of seafood is high, the fishing areas have suffered over-exploitation and there was a big reduction in allowable catches imposed by the EU, so the future is in the aquaculture sector and in sustainable fishing.

The major production is in molluscs, mainly mussels, in Galicia (North of Spain). The main species of cultured fishes are rainbow trout and gilthead seabream, but there are several projects with the aim of the development of the culture of other species like sea bass, turbot, salmon, etc.

Research and industry must work together in order to raise the quality and quantity of the food and to decrease the environmental impact of the farms.

Carmen Doñate
PhD student, Universidad AutĂłnoma de Barcelona, Spain.
