AQUAINNOVA Final event - Presentations online

On Tuesday, 30th October 2012, the EATiP (European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform) presented its Vision for European Aquaculture in 2030 at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels.

Through the widest consultation ever made on European aquaculture - supported by the European FP7 project 'Aquainnova' - the development of sectoral growth forecasts and accompanying challenges and needs of the sector in 2030 have been prepared. The Vision is accompanied by the identification of a range of goals within a comprehensive Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda whose achievement will contribute to reaching the targets described. Fish farmers associations roll-out innovative training to the Mediterranean Mariculture industry

Over the past two months, a total of eight innovative training courses aimed at the Mediterranean Mariculture industry were delivered across Greece, Spain and Turkey through the EU Lifelong Learning Project INTRANEMMA (Innovation Transfer Network for Mediterranean Mariculture).

This pioneering project led by the fish farmers associations of Greece (FGM), Spain (APROMAR) and Turkey (Mugla fish farmers Association), along with AQUARK (Greece and AquaTT (Ireland), recently developed the training based on identified shared knowledge gaps. The series of training courses aimed to upskill workers, transfer latest knowledge and be a forum for sharing experiences. The courses raised a lot of interest and were well attended by Fish Vets, Health Managers, Production Managers, Hatchery Managers, Feed Company Managers, R&D Managers and PhD Students amongst others. Overall the participants rated the courses highly, finding the courses not only informative but useful for their own practices. Information on all courses is available online:

To access videos of the expert presentations and also course material register through the website http://www.intranemma.eu/index.php?option=com_user&view=register&lang=en. For more information on the project contact Panos Christofilogiannis - INTRANEMMA Project Manager (panos@aquark.gr).

New EU Project to Explore Unknown Potential of Marine Microorganisms

Take a glass of seawater. Pour a drop onto your hand. Take a closer look. You are looking at a genetically diverse environment potentially containing over one million different microorganisms. A small-scale gigantic world in the palm of your hand.

The total biomass and genetic diversity of microorganisms on earth is many times higher than that of all other organisms, including man, put together. The number of species is unknown but must number in the many tens of millions. A new EC-funded project has started to explore these unknown microorganisms in the marine environment. MaCuMBA (Marine Microorganisms: Cultivation Methods for Improving their Biotechnological Applications) is a four-year project with a budget of over €12 million, of which €9 million is funded by the EC Seventh Framework Programme. The project held its kick-off meeting in Amsterdam in October.

    AQUAMED 1st Open Multi-Stakeholder Meeting

On the 20th and 21st of November 2012, the AQUAMED 1st Open Multi-Stakeholder Meeting took place in Rome. The aim of the meeting was to identify the research priorities in the Mediterranean aquaculture sector and to explore the potential benefits of setting up a Mediterranean Stakeholders Platform (MSHP). Around 60 stakeholders from the industry, government and research sectors from 13 Mediterranean countries participated in the meeting (Algeria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey).

AQUAMED is an EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) supporting the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean region. Stakeholders from 13 Mediterranean countries were invited to join the project's researcher partners in order to develop a common Action Plan to support the establishment of a MSHP. The purpose of the MSHP will be to avoid duplication and fragmentation of research efforts, and to stimulate long-term cooperation and coordination between policy-makers, the aquaculture industry and RTD performers in the Mediterranean. AquaTT Working with EURAXESS to Keep Researchers in Motion

AquaTT delivered a training session for the EURAXESS Network's Bridge Head Organisation representatives in Brussels in November. EURAXESS is a unique platform providing access to a complete range of information and support services for European and non-European researchers wishing to pursue research careers in Europe. The training session took place in the Hotel Bloom and was attended by 50 delegates.

The training was provided through AquaTT's Mentoring, Training and Advisory services. The bespoke training session was designed to complement and enhance the participants' abilities and skills to interact with industry and convey the EURAXESS' 'Researchers in Motion' message. The training was participative and included an interactive multimedia module on profiling industry end-users of EURAXESS' services as well as identifying and overcoming potential communication barriers between EURAXESS and industry. A second module used group-based activities to identify the most effective channels, tools and content for EURAXESS representatives to use in order to increase their interaction with industry. For more information about EURAXESS log onto http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess/.

ESCO - Skills/Competences, Occupations and Qualifications - Vital role of AQUATT in this new EU initiative

Mapping of occupational sectors is one main pillar on which ESCO is based. It is also one area on which AQUATT and its partners in the WAVE and VALLA projects have spent a great deal of time and energy. It is therefore gratifying to be able to report that at the latest meeting of the ESCO reference group on agriculture, fisheries and forestry, AQUATT’s profiling of the aquaculture industry (along with the relevant competences and learning outcomes) is being used as the template for the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

Much of the information being released on ESCO will sound very familiar to some of the readers of this newsletter. ESCO is in the process of developing two online tools, “to help European citizens enhance their skills and meet the demands of tomorrow’s labour market.  These multilingual tools, created with the aim of improving and facilitating skills matching, can increase the efficiency with which jobseekers will find vacancies and employers will find candidates.”

Sounds familiar? Heard that before somewhere? Read the fill press release here (PDF).

      Creating fish-friendly environments

Research aimed at protecting migrating fish that inhabit rivers and estuaries impacted by dams and power plants, is being conducted at the University of Southampton and led by Dr Paul Kemp, from the university's International Centre for Ecohydraulics Research (ICER). This European science centre is fast making a name for itself around the world as it helps engineers develop hydropower to understand fish behaviour and come up with innovative ways to keep them away from turbines and intake systems.
