Working on the future management of European Fisheries

Over the next 3 years a new pioneering €3 million research project called SOCIOEC, funded by the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Union (EU) and led by the Institute of Sea Fisheries of the Johann Heinrich von Thunen-Institut (vTI), Germany, aims to respond to the challenge of the new management measures potentially applied in the context of reform of the new Common Fisheries Policy. SOCIOEC brings together a multidisciplinary consortium from 25 institutions (research, industry and SMEs) based across Europe guided by the ethos of maintaining the environmental, economic and social sustainability of European fisheries. The project kicked off with a partnership meeting in middle March 2012 in Salerno, Italy.

Recirculating technology a key part of future aquaculture

Technology that reduces water consumption by around 98 per cent is a key feature of new recirculating systems now available to the global aquaculture industry, according to an aquaculture specialist speaking at the Australasian Aquaculture Conference 2012 conference in Melbourne. Professor Thomas M Losordo, who presented at the Aquaculture Recirculating Technology Short-Course at the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT), said such technology must be part of the future for the rapidly growing aquaculture industry.

    A sea-change in CO2 data records

Scientists have gained a new tool in their efforts to research the world's changing environment: the Surface Ocean CO2 (carbon dioxide) Atlas (SOCAT). This is the most comprehensive dataset of surface water carbon dioxide measurements for the world's oceans and coastal seas, made up of 6.3 million global observations generated from research vessels, commercial ships and moorings around the world since 1968.

LIFE+ SUBLIMO project - reducing the loss of marine biodiversity

According to evaluations published in August 2010, the marine biodiversity decrease is particularly important in the Mediterranean Sea. Causes are multiple and mainly due to human activities, habitat degradation, overexploitation of natural resources, climate change, invasive species and pollution. The SUBLIMO project proposes a new approach to analyze, to monitor and to reduce this loss of marine biodiversity.

Danish wind farms give fish a big boost

Wind farms benefit the environment but a new study investigating their impact on marine life in Denmark has discovered that fish also profit from this alternative source of energy. The findings, presented in the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) report titled 'Effect of the Horns Rev 1 Offshore Wind Farm on Fish Communities. Follow-up Seven Years after Construction', suggest that wind turbines have a positive effect on fish, with some species increasing in number.

Study investigates aquatic parasites on fish

Researchers in the Czech Republic, Spain and the United Kingdom have successfully identified the cellular components and mechanisms that play a role in the proliferation of myxozoa, tiny aquatic parasites responsible for diseases in commercially valuable fish. Presented in the journal PLoS ONE, the study's findings shed light on the motility of myxozoa's proliferative states and their reproductive process.
