Education

Workshop: The Changing Marine Environment in the 21st Century, 26th - 27th March 2009, Dove Marine Laboratory Newcastle University (UK)

This workshop is part of a year long programme of celebrations to mark the Centenary of the Dove Marine Laboratory. The central focus will be the future role of European Marine Science stations and research institutes in supporting marine biological research. International Symposium and EFI+ Workshop: Improving the ecological status of fish communities in inland waters, 30 March - 3 April 2009, Hull (UK)

Along with disseminating the results of the EFI+ project to the scientific community, administrators, and stakeholders; the symposium will extend the discussion on the strategies needed to implement successfully current environmental legislation with respect to improving the status of fish communities.  In addition to the symposium a one-day workshop (3rd April 2009) for managers and end-users will be held to present and use the tools produced in the EFI+ project. Professional training course: ‘Design of breeding programs for aquaculture’, 21-23 April 2009, Wageningen (the Netherlands)

The aim of this 3-day course is to provide people working in the field of fish (re)production with the knowledge that will enable them to design a simple breeding program, evaluate the costs and benefits of a breeding program, and to discuss sophisticated breeding programs with professional breeding organizations. Workshop: The ontogeny of the fish immune system, 4-5 May 2009, University of Copenhagen (Denmark)

The Danish Fish Immunology Research Network, in collaboration with the research school SCOFDA (Sustainable Control of Fish Diseases in Aquaculture) will organise a two day workshop.  Submitted papers are also welcome. Advanced Seminar: Use of geographic information systems for fisheries and aquaculture planning and management, 8-19 June 2009, Zaragoza (Spain)

A series of multi-disciplinary 11-month Masters Programmes in aquaculture is available from September 2009. New MSc Program in Aquatic Science and Technology, Denmark

The new MSc program offers a unique combination of biology, mathematics and technology and addresses global challenges in climate, environment and food resources. FAO releases new "State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2008" report

The FAO has released its latest "State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture" (SOFIA) report, with a focus on the effects of climate change. AquaRing – Online resource bringing European resources on the aquatic world to you

AquaRing is a European project to set up an innovative semantic demonstration portal for digital content on the aquatic world. The goal of this online resource is to allow access to a wealth of multimedia digital material and documents, with a particular focus on sustainable use of the world’s oceans. Launch of Google Ocean

The Ray Lankester Investigatorship

The Marine Biological Association of the UK funds the above fellowship for short research visits to its Plymouth Laboratory.  The current value of the Ray Lankester Investigatorship is £1,500 per calendar month for a maximum of five months. Student Corner

Workshop of the EAS-Student Group at Aquaculture Europe 2009 (Norway)

The EAS Student Group will organise a workshop on the 15th of August within the AE2009 conference in Trondheim, Norway. Topics covered include Time Planning and Project Management during PhD Study, AQUA-TNET and others. Participants must be registered for the AE2009. Field Trip of the EAS-Student Group at Aquaculture Europe 2009 (Norway)

The EAS-SG will organise a field trip in Trondheim, Norway on the 14th of August. Participants will visit a Salmon Farm which produces smolts in recirculating aquaculture systems and a Cod Farm which produces juveniles in flow-through systems. This student field trip is free for EAS-SG members, however registration is required (deadline of registration: 27th of March).
